Q: What cord is needed to connect mid-2007 iMac monitor to new 27" Retina iMac?

Neither of those iMacs support that.

Here are the iMac computers that support Target Display Mode (TDM):

- iMac (27-inch late 2009)
- iMac (27-inch Mid 2010)
- iMac (Mid 2011)
- iMac (Midi 2012 and later)
- Note! The new iMac with 5K Retina Display is not compatible with TDM.

You're right when you said "sadly"...bummed out now. I guess it wouldn't connect with any other type of iMac at all...not even a non-retina display?

The new 27" Retina iMac can send it's display to a TDM compatible iMac.

The mid-2007 iMac can not.

How about the 21.5" iMac? Would the Mid-2007 work with that model, or basically nothing at all because it doesn't have the capability at ALL to do a Target Display Mode (even with an alternative connection than the Thunderbolt).

To use TDM, you need to have a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port. (They are the same port shape)
