Oct 21, 2015 12:19 PM in response to G J Piperby JimmyCMPIT,Not having that issue but it's a stability update so it might, although reading it a bit closer it seems like it's going to be the most benefit to anyone with Office 2016 that felt they were short changed with Emoji's as they searched for elusive subway stations.
Also BSOD is a very established MS Windows meme. We might need a new name like "black screen" or "KSOD" - as in CMYK to avoid confusion. Maybe this thing has a name already. I don't know.

Oct 21, 2015 12:36 PM in response to JimmyCMPITby G J Piper,BSOD stands for "Black Screen Of Death" generically. Apparently it no longer is just a Windows thing, because I had to reformat and reinstall just to get my iMac 2011 27" to get past it. It would boot until part of the progress bar was visible, then *poof* Black Screen of Death. lol

Oct 28, 2015 10:30 AM in response to G J Piperby jwestveer,I had the same problem after updating to 10.11.1.
NVRAM reset { How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support }
and
SMS reset { Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support }
fixed the problem for me.

Oct 28, 2015 10:55 AM in response to G J Piperby JimmyCMPIT,BKSod is Black Screen of Death and not to be confused with BSoD which is not. Just like the CD tray is not a cup holder.

Oct 28, 2015 11:08 AM in response to G J Piperby JimmyCMPIT,have you tried the SMC and PRAM reset?
are you able to get a chime and boot into recovery mode?
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
I had an instance where I could not get to recovery and used FSCK but that was before I read this and it was not El Cap (it was mavericks.)
have you removed all USB/FW/TB devices from your computer and attempted a reboot (you will still need mouse and keyboard unless you iMac was bluetooth)
have you attempted to boot into safe mode

Oct 28, 2015 11:19 AM in response to JimmyCMPITby G J Piper,Tried all of those things, and yes, they all do or don't work depending on how you define "worked".
The problem seems to be transient. About one out of 10 forced-reboots will boot up normally, and the rest go to a black screen with nothing but a mouse pointer right after the startup bar completes.
So, technically none of the solutions worked for me in 10.11.0 because the problem persisted.
I don't have enough restarts logged in 10.11.1 to know if it is now fixed after the update, but I have restarted twice successfully now after allowing the 10.11.1 update so perhaps it is resolved. (Why Apple didn't include the fix in their release noted is beyond me though if it is fixed)

Oct 28, 2015 11:32 AM in response to G J Piperby JimmyCMPIT,not wide spread, but it has happened.
if you wish to investigate this further please post an etrecheck report
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
in the mean time check your HW using this
Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support
and check you Hard Drive for any errors by booting into Disk Utility from Recovery
and if you are running ANY AntiVirus, Clean my Mac, MacKeeper type garbage on your Mac take it off now - that stuff is pure chaos and will cause serious headaches.

Oct 28, 2015 12:20 PM in response to jwestveerby jwestveer,Just to clarify.
After upgrading to 10.11.1 My IMAC (2010) would randomly just blank out with a black screen.
The machine was still running, just no backlight.
If i manually put the machine to sleep with the power button, and then wake it up again, it would
work for a few seconds to a few minutes, and then go black again.
I could not put it into "safe" mode, because it would black out before the boot was completed.
I could not do a "time machine recovery" because it would black out before the screen would come up.
I could hook up a secondary screen, and see that the host was still running, but the primary screen was black.
For me a NVRAM reset, and a SMS reset has seemed to resolve the problem.
