Q: iTunes won't open after updating to 12.3.1

Hi I have OSX 10.11.1 running and I updated my iTunes to 12.3.1. Now all I get is the spinning beach ball when i try to start iTunes. I did a force quit and rebooted but the same thing is happening. I have a huge music library so I thought maybe it was doing some kind of update by after a half hour iTunes is still got the spinning beach ball. Any help would be appreciated.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I did the same thing, and also got iTunes to open. It will even do some easy commands. I got it to write two playlists to cd, though it took a long time. I have about 400 movies in my library, to watch on my TV through Apple TV. This no longer works.
I thought I could go to my backup, which was last updated before the upgrades. To my amazement, I found that my iTunes updater installed the new version on both my main disc and my backup disc. I didn't tell it to do that, and didn't even know it was possible. My El Capitan updater only updated the main disc, not the backup. So I'm screwed on iTunes.

Did you reinstall 12.3.1 or revert to 12.3.0? Doing the latter worked for me.

Did you try to revert to 12.3.0.44? Or do you still have 12.3.1?

    This is from another thread:

This is from other people. Worked for me, anyway.

    Download 12.3:

    http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/download-review/1957301/apple-itunes-for-mac-1110

    Then:

    1. Open the Terminal
    2. Run "sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app"
    3. Re-install iTunes

Also, be aware that when it asks for your password, the password won't be visible as you type it. After you type password, hit enter and iTunes should be deleted.

After I reinstalled 12.3.0.44, things worked as before. Note: I had to restart to my iMac before the version number in Finder matched the actual version number found by looking at "About iTunes" in the menu. Also, I then ran repair disk permissions via OnyX. It showed some problems w/ iTunes permissions, but those may or may not have been relevant to any of this problem.

Good luck and hope this helps.

I am having trouble with iTunes 12.3.1 too, after updating on a Yosemite system. At first the program just seemed hung - Force Quit showing '(not responding)'. After a while a completely black window appeared and the '(not responding)' message briefly disappeared. However, it was soon back again and I had to wait over half an hour before, suddenly, the iTunes view of my library (ca. 28000 songs) was displayed.

That seemed better but my joy didn't last long. It was soon back to '(not responding)' and everything was hung again. At least, briefly. Now it is running again but who knows for how long? Not very long. It keeps oscillating back and forwards to '(not responding)'.

The program is certainly unsatisfactory presently.

I've been reading about reinstalling 12.3.0, and seeing I need to do something in Terminal to do it. I've been using Macs for 30 years, but have never used Terminal, and have no idea how to do it.

Terminal is in your Application folder inside the Utilities folder. Just open the program, copy the info inside the quotes below and paste into the window. Hit enter. Enter your password when that prompt appears; you won't see the actual typing. Hit enter again. After a few seconds, iTunes will be deleted. You can watch your applications to see when it is gone. Then install 12.3.0. When you do that, if you have Genius selected, iTunes will take some time to update that (visible in upper right hand corner of the iTunes window). When that is done, w/ luck, you should have your useable iTunes back again.

Update:  I left that little beachball spinning.  Had some cookies and milk.  Read some other forums.  Brushed my teeth and low and behold all is working well now.

Just to make sure, I quit iTunes and reopened it.  I can rest easy until the next update!

You did the correct thing walking away and letting it do its thing -- better would have been to not do any other tasks while whatever was rebuilding was running so that itunes had maximum memory to work with.

If what happened is normal than the only fix that Apple should add - is a message to say -- Go have some cookies and milk - I am in the process of upgrading your database.    If you look in your user/music/Itunes folder there may be a Previous Itunes Library folder that has a bunch of of dated files in them where the date is the last update to itunes you processed.  Mine are all 135KB small so its not the actual library - maybe just a key.

Addition to this original post -- I looked at the contents of these small files and prior to Snow Leopard - from my Power Mac - the files were not encrypted so I could see that they contain lists of songs -- the ones from Leopard and Snow Leopard seem to be  encrypted - or just compressed into gobbly-gook but are also the same size.

I did note during Itunes 11 updates - on opening - the default setup was to go into the ITUNES store so it would try to connect.    I never opened Itunes while connected to the internet - and never had a problem with an upgrade -- looking at preferences - if you are connected to the internet and open Itunes after an update - and have your system set up to automatically download podcasts or whatever -- that may be what is really slowing down the initial open - so I recommend disconnecting from the internet - then open Itunes and take it off the Itunes store -- you can just cancel the message.   The indexing may run faster and you just might not lose anything.

Just another one to say it happened to me too...

Completely unusable after upgrade. Not an El Capitan issue as I'm still running 10.9.5

Luckily I keep a bootable backup so I could start up from that and managed to replace iTunes 12.3.1 with my old copy.
