Q: Updating Apps

I just got an iPhone 6 plus and I am unable to download updates to my apps. The system keeps asking for my Apple ID and password over and over. The ID and password are correct as I can sign on to my account no problem. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Go to Settings>iTunes & App Store. Tap your Apple ID and sign out.

Force restart the phone. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. No data will be lost.

Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store. Sign in again.

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it and it did not work. When I click Update All at the top of my iPhone I am prompted to sign into the I Tunes Store. When I do this the apps "spin" and then they all say update. When I push update I'm prompted again to enter iD and password.

Try this. Sign out of your account again, then Go to Settings>Airplane Mode>On which will disable your connection to the Internet. Force restart the device again, turn airplane mode off and sign in again.

I'm trying to find a way to allow your device to refresh the connection between your Apple ID and the stores and that is why I am suggesting these particular steps.

Another approach.... Sign out again and just restart the phone the normal way. Go to the App Store and tap on an app that needs an update - don't tap on update all - one app at a time. You should be prompted for the ID and password. Enter the credentials and see what happens.

Thank you. This gave me an idea. I had 26 apps that needed updates. I went through one by one and deleted them from my phone then went to the app store and added them back. This worked but 7 of the apps are still showing as needing updates -- odd.

Now I am nervous to back up my phone in iTunes because I don't want them all to revert to the old versions. Do you know if there is a chance of this happening or will the new phone have "seniority."

The way that iTunes works now is a little bit different with regard to how apps are backed up. Let me get to the point first. Always update all of your apps in iTunes on your computer as well as updating on the phone. In fact update in iTunes, before you sync the Phone. I suggest this because of what Apple has introduced in iOS 9 - App Thinning.

    http://www.imore.com/app-thinning-ios-9-explained

You only get the code/features that you need in any particular app for your particular device, which keeps the size of the apps down and saves storage space which is important to those that have 8GB or 16GB devices. From what I understand - and I am not totally clear on this - the transfer purchase feature of iTunes apparently is not supposed to work any longer - even though I have seen it work as recently as yesterday when I was prompted to transfer my purchases from my iPad 3 into iTunes. Apple still shows transferring purchases as being a viable option as well here.

It s also my understanding that if you update/download apps in iTunes, you are always downloading the "full" version and not the "thinned" version. Like I said, this is as clear as mud to me at this point, but if you want to be safe, update all of the apps in iTunes, then sync the phone. You can update directly on the phone as well.... I update apps directly on my devices, but I make a habit of updating all of the Apps in iTunes every other day as well, before I backup and sync.

I don't know if this is the correct approach or not, but that's how I do it.
