Q: Am I able to send myself files from iMac to iPad per airdrop?

If the answer is yes, then If so, where are the files saved? Apple states we can save "On an iOS device, [and] the item appears in the appropriate app. For example, photos appear in the Photos app and websites appear in Safari." Okay, simple, but what about a file folder filled with documents? I am trying to backup (per se') documents needed for a school field experience Brazilian trip in a couple of days, just in case internet services are sketchy. I want the documents on my iPad, not in a cloud (iCloud or Google).

You need to look up the system requirements for Airdrop and then see if both of those devices meet then requirements.

That is not the problem though. Both my iMac and my iPad have Airdrop. Once I okay the transfer, where are my files? I am not able to locate them, so I just need to know where to look. They are not photos, etc, they are documents.

Receive items
If the recipient is signed in to your iCloud account, the item you're sending is automatically accepted and saved. Otherwise, the recipient is asked to accept the item before it's saved to their device.
On a Mac, the item is saved to the Downloads folder.
On an iOS device, the item appears in the appropriate app. For example, photos appear in the Photos app and websites appear in Safari.

That is my point. Since documents do not have an app...then where? Especially, since my documents have to be Word and not .pages. I am beginning to think it is not possible.

On your IOS device use Finder, on the Mac it clearly states the files are in the Downloads folder.

On iOS, you have Spotlight.
Some Words doc can be open using Pages. Do you have Pages on your iPad?

As mentioned, IOS does have Spotlight. If you are on 9.0 or later swipe to the right and look in the search (Spotlight) field. Search for your file(s).

Okay, so...I found my spotlight (new to Apple and I had to use bing to find it), but it apparently did not transfer. The beginning of the file is IP690 and all spotlight found were emails from school pertaining to that class number. So, then I opened all of the apps (Word, Pages, Adobe, and even Docs) and nothing. Something would have brought it up if it existed. I may have to depend on iCloud and I only hope the internet is in working order when I arrive in country.

Do you also have Pages on the Mac?
Try converting to Pages and make sure iCloud for Documents is ON (both iPad & Mac)
You can see the docs using your browser in
https://www.icloud.com
