Q: Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says  "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

So it appears that dispite me being in a small minority of users, there is actually acknowledgement of an issue by Apple. I see from the other posts that you are also succeeding in irritating other people too. Don't you think it's time you went away to play with your toys and leave us inferior beings alone?

Actually, I just finished a chat with Apple Support person, who refreshingly didn't try to palm me off or re-direct me, but actually said..."Okay i see. Yeah it looks like they are working for a resolution to this problem right now so it is a known issue to Apple. Once there is a solution than you will be notified by an Apple Rep or receive an email. Yeah. Apparently it’s happened to a few people and they’re working on a solution but since it’s noted in your case you should be contacted directly."

    "happened to a few people"

Hmmm...  Pretty much what I said.

Yep, that's what I said and also what Apple said.  Hmmm...

Oh my, you just will not go away will you?! Get it.. I for one am not interested in anything you have to say. Goodbye.

There is an issue, created since IOS9 update that is affecting users, who are in search of answers and solutions (to which you have offered no useful contribution).

If you're not interested in facts, don't read my posts.

Everyone, just ignore him. Looking through his past postings in his profile, he is just a Troll. He thrives on this stuff. Don't reply to his comments.

There's the troll charge again.  Good technique when you're unable to respond with logic.

The problem is with POP accounts -- I have no idea if IMAP also have problems.

It seems that not only must you have a constant connection, the messages must still be on the server *in the inbox*. If they've been moved or deleted, they become "this message has not been downloaded" -- even if they *have* been downloaded, possibly more than once.

This started when iOS 9 came out. POP worked just fine for years before that.

It seems as if Apple has tried to IMAPize POP accounts in its iOS mail app. They also added a couple of settings that look like IMAP-wannabees -- e.g. a choice to 'move message to Archive', except that the messages disappear from there too, leaving only the headers & dreaded "not downloaded" statement. Not what I'd call an "archive".

I'm just glad I've never depended on Apple for my mail-processing; I just use my iPhone to read over messages, see what-all's there, flag some to deal with later. At least having the headers flagged remind me of which ones I need to attend to first -- from my PC.

Maybe it's time to change my workflow habits again, but it sure has been nice these past few years to browse new messages and look over old ones (often w/ handy links in them) and ponder/remind myself what I want to do with them -- from the comfort of my recliner.

I did submit feedback to Apple but of course do not expect to hear anything back from them.

Looks like you got a support rep with a new script to mollify the customers.

I wouldn't be holding my breath on it though, I've heard too many similar responses about product-problems over the years -- not just tech, but all sorts of products.

It makes sense that the Mail app will be geared toward IMAP accounts as Apple's mail servers (dot-mac, dot-me and dot-cloud) are IMAP.

I personally do not have any POP accounts.  What happens if you use Safari and go directly to the server instead of using Apple's Mail app?

I can no longer open Word attachments with my iPad, although I have a Word app, ever since I updated to iOS 9.

What does that have to do with Mail?
