Q: Updated my iPhone to iOS v9, now can't use it with my iTunes

Hi,

I think I'm stuck! Deets...

iPhone 6, newly updated to iOS v9

iMac 5,1, about 8 years old, OS X v10.6.8

Error message: "The iPhone “Rob's iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."

The iTunes page says the latest version requires OS X v10.7.5, so I can't install that one. And when I check for updates in iTunes, it says there are none. Software Update on the iMac says ther are no updates. (Not surprisingly.) My iMac can run 10.7.5, but that OS doesn't support Rosatta, which I still use for some older software I can't afford to upgrade.

Did I just get made redundant? No more backups for my iPhone?

Rob

@HumanBerlin: Thank you for your post. I too was forced to download El Capitan from Snow Leopard 10.8.6 because I could not backup or restore my iPod or my iPad anymore with the old iTunes. BTW: I was helping Apple test the public beta of IOS 9.1 on my iPad. I read that they were no longer signing IOS 8.4.1. I tried to restore back to 8.4.1 on my iPad and could not. Fortunately after installing, El Capitan on a partitioned drive and using the Migration Assistant, I got everything back except one (previously free) App which I had to buy now, but Apple Support graciously reimbursed me for the cost.

El Capitan is nice, but extremely slow to load on Mac Book Pro early 2008. I am now using iCloud to back up both my IPod and iPad.

I agree that there are no technical, but economical reasons for  Apple to force  us out of Snow Leopard via a force update of iTunes.   I  am also disappointed because my budget prevents me from buying a new Mac Book or Mac Book Pro, as well.

Matt W - Thanks for your advice & will try to upgrade to Mountain Lion during next week. But still, the feeling of indirectly forced to pay is so bad & so disappointed with Apple.

Same problem here.  But luckily I have my old iphone 4 and am using that just for Itunes and it works a treat. So maybe that is an option.  To buy an old Iphone and used it like an IPOD?  I just happened to have it in a drawer and phew!!!

I have the same exact issue as you do. Did you ever find a work around? This is ridiculous! I dont want to upgrade my entire computer, because I am a graphic designer and I know it will screw up all my software. Ugggg....

If you have room on your computer just partition it and install El Capitan on the new partition. After it is installed use the Migration Asst to bring over only the iTunes stuff, and you can just use the partition for this purpose only.

We're getting a little off topic here folks. The point of my original post was that I wasn't warned I was upgrading my iPhone beyond what the version of iTunes which assisted in the upgrade could support, and that my hardware can't run a later operating system so that I could upgrade iTunes. In other words, Apple knowingly forced me into a bind and did not offer a downgrade path or any other fix.

If others want to talk about dealing with the issue on later hardware that can run later OSes, that discussion should occur in another thread.

Agreed. At best Apple screwed up by missing this problem. I did talk to an apple tech and the final word is 'sorry cant help you'.

    from apple...

I believe it was intended that iTunes was allowed to update your phone (as some people’s phones will get stuck in recovery mode and they will need to restore and update to get it working again) but I think it’s unfortunate there wasn’t a warning saying that the phone would no longer be compatible to sync with the computer.

    Sincerely,

What "was" really "intended" is that Apple no longer cares about anything older than 2 years, and I'd argue it's actually much less than that. Apple has to put so much effort into making every tiny change look bigger than it really is, and they have to do it annually! There isn't room for quality.

If Apple wrote a patch for iTunes 11.4 to indicate that it would blow up your iTunes-iOS sync experience, they wouldn't get you into new software on one of your devices, which, in turn might fail to cause a cascade of upgrades requiring a new purchase. Plus, iTunes 11 doesn't have hooks into the new subscriprion model of Apple Music. It's the same thinking that removed the Software Update feature from the Apple Menu which existed for years (decades?) until Yosemite. That feature bypassed the MAS store landing page, and Apple couldn't have us missing a potential sale because we just wanted to check for a new printer update.

if your Mac is older than 2014, in Apple's eyes you are not worth supporting.

It may be true that if your Mac is older than 2014, in Apple's eyes you are not worth supporting.

Suggestion: Why does not Apple allow a subsidiary or startup geek company to support older Macs for a fee?

Just and update to my situation, maybe it will help someone, maybe not. I tried doing many of the things suggested in this post, only to have my iphone 5 completely reset and then still not connect to the newer version of itunes. So then I took it to ATT where I bought it and asked them if they could downgrade my iphone software and got a big NO from them. So they sold me on a new Iphone 6 Plus. These come with the old version installed and I was able to plug into my Itunes and back up my old info perfectly. Of course after that was complete it asked me to upgrade to 9.0.1 or whatever. **** NO!!! Dont update... Well, my new gigantic phone works great and I didnt have to do anything to my computer. Expensive little situation Apple put me through.

Similar problem to my Ipad 4.

Updated to ios 9.1 from ios 7.1.2, now says my latest iTunes does not recognise the iPad.

Although my iTunes is the latest for OS 10.6.8

    Same issue here
I have iPhone 5, iTunes 11.4 on iMac ( bought 2009 ) with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on it.
I shouldn't upgrade my iPhone from iOS 8.3 to iOS 9.1 (final version).

No way to upgrade OSX to El Capitain because some software i use wouldn't running and i know it can make slow the iMac.

Anyone know how to downgrade ? i still have my old ipsw 8.3. But have no idea how to do that.

Or, maybe copy the iTunes library to another Mac with newer newer iTunes and restore from this iTunes could work ? any idea?

    Thanks for sharing.
I think this solution worthly for me who didn't want to loose my old programs and run well on Snow Leopard.
So, you have newer iTunes and can sync iPhone now ? any problem till now ?
    Thanks
