Q: Possible to run WIN 7 on SD card

Hello guys,

I would appreciate an answer for my question. I am not a big computer geek so I have very basic computer knowledge.

I neet to use Win 7 for car diagnostics, but actually since I changed for Mac's I prefer a boot camp installation and use Win 7 virtually instead of buying another laptop.

Upgrading my Mac Air's SSD is about £250-£300 but there is a cost effective option if it works.

I found this on eBay and it looks very good speed wise, also a 250GB available too.

Would it be possible to install and run Win 7 with Bootcamp with this SD card?

Thank you.

Short answer is no. If you are short on space, install a minimal Windows 20-30GB on the MBA and use the SD card as D: (or any other external device) for all you programs and large disk space requirements.

There are cloning solutions (Winclone, CampTune, CloneZilla), which can clone from an internal to an external disk, but may or may not work.

What year/model is your MBA? Since it has an SD Card, it should be fairly recent. Does it have a Thunderbolt port?

It is (Mid 2013) It has a thunderbolt port. I have around 45, 50 Gb free space due to my everyday activities. I thought it would be easier to install it on SD card so if I need I can stick it in and good to go.

My problem with external drives. when I do a diagnostic on a vehicle's  it just cumbersome to take my laptop attached with an external drive. SD card would be a more sophisticated option.

actually Adobe package us lots of space for my 128GB. Is it possible to keep both Os on my SSD and install the programs on the SD card? Would it work that way?

    1. You can install OSX on the SD Card and put Windows on internal SSD.

    2. You can use the SD Card as D: and have a minimal Windows on the SSD.

    3. You can split the SD Card in half, and install programs on one half as D: and move some of your OSX documents to the other half of the SD Card.

    4. You can split the SSD in half, put OSX and Windows on it and use the SD card as your primary storage for both Windows and OSX, similar to 3.

Woww. I got so many options. Thanks mate. I definitely buy that Sd card. By any chance. Do you have a link for a good tutorial how can I split my SSD and install both OS. I think that is the best option performance wise.

    1. Get your SD Card, split it in half, using OS X Disk Utility.

    2. Format one half as Mac OS X  Extended Journaled(JHFS+), the other half as FAT32.

    3. Move some OS X Data to the JHFS+ part, so you can free up about 30-40GB. This should give you about 80Gb on the SSD.

    4. Use BC Assistant to partition and install Windows on 64GB of the internal SSD.

    5. Install Windows data/programs on the FAT32 as necessary.

Use How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support and https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/assistant/6.0/ for further information.

Post back on this discussion, once you get the SD card, and I can help.

Well Instal done. However, I have an issue with wifi. I think the card not fully suported. I can see two devces under Network adapters in windows and both Bloetooth.

I tried the solution I found in uther tread. Uninstal drivers and scan for hardware change, but wifi still not appears.

The two device Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network) and Bloetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)

When I chose OS at login. A network apears and I need to enter the my wifi password but when I log in to Win 10 still no wifi

Under Other devices there are some drivers missing I see the little warning sign.

    Multimedia Controller

    Network Controller

    PCI Simple Communications

    SM Bus Controller

Run setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder of your USB where you downloaded the Windows Support Software. It is a good sign to have these unknown devices, which implies the Windows installation went properly, but drivers are missing.

Setup.exe running was not possible. I deleted my USB stick already. How ever I downloaded the latest Bootcamp Support software and re install the Wifi driver and it works now.

The missing drivers under other devices sorted as well except one the multimedia controller. Windows cannot find driver. I just hoping that is not the SD card slot.

I also do not have sound even if the driver seems ok and no right click on my touchpad.

Insert a SD card and look under disk drives.
