Q: Back to My Mac - may be slow ....

I found several articles which addressed the message "Back to My Mac may be slow because NAT Port Mapping (NAT- PMP) or Universal Plug and Play ((UPnP)is turned off at your computer".   The articles were helpful in that they told you how to get into the right place in Airport Utility but when I clicked on Network I found the next step was denied as it was greyed out.   Right at the bottom there was a box saying enable Back to My Mac so I did and added my AppleID after clicking + button.  I still get the notice if I click Details in iCloud (System Preferences) but I suspect that as I only have one computer now, instead of 2, my other devices being an iPhone and iPad this facility is redundant.  Am I right?

My laptop is a MacBook Pro 13" with retina display, early 2015 running MAC OSX 10.11.1 El Capitan.

If you are referring to this Apple Support article, then it is talking about your router, not your computer. Back to my Mac (BTMM) requires a router that supports either NAT-PMP or UPnP. The Apple routers support the former; most others support the latter.

This article as refers you to another where it describes how to configure your router for NAT, and if an Apple router, for NAT-PMP. However the step to set up a Default Host is NOT required for using BTMM.
