Q: Mail cannot log into accounts after El Capitan

Mail repeatedly popup asks for both my email account passwords. When i enter them, it says "Unable to verify account name or password"

I have also re-entered the passwords in Mail>Accounts. Same results

But, I can sign into my Network Solutions webhost mail website with both the account names and passwords. Both also work perfectly on my iPhone Mail

So, the problem is clearly with Mail and the updates in El Capitan, since it worked fine for years prior to the update today

Don't quite understand that? How do you do that? Also another problem I am faced with, I am not able to install Office for Mac 2008. Any solution?

If you go to your Google account, under Sign in & Security, you should see an option for 2 Step Verification. If you enable that, (a few steps are involved to get it set up) you'll then have the option to generate an app specific password which you would use instead of your "normal" Google password when setting up Mail for your Google POP account.

*You'll have to delete your Gmail account in Mail and start over, but it eliminates the enabling of the "less secure app" setting, which gave me a little more peace of mind, even though my Mac is at home and I'm the only one who has access to it.

As far as Office, I don't use it on my Mac, so sorry, can't help there.

Hi there, was having all kinds of issues after the upgrade - all along the lines of passwords not working and application connectivity. I ended doing the following and now I'm back up and running.

Turns out that third-party utilities & applications are considered a 'threat' and by default are limited in what they can do. For example, accessing keychain etc. So, as far as the OS is concerned they are blocked. You can add the offending program to the list of approved apps ( System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Accessibility ) and this issue will go away. So for example, add Outlook, Mac Mail, and any other application which is giving issues.

    Hope this helps!

Tried doing that. (Added Mail app to list, then went back to Gmail and turned "Allow less secure apps" back ON) It's back to where it was not accepting my password/email to log on. Turned it back OFF and now it works again. So this fix doesn't pertain to the Gmail issue with El Capitan. Thanks anyway though.

Same error and I know I have the correct password because I'm logged into my iCloud with the browser.

Sounds so basic, but deleting passwords on both sections, like you mentioned, actually worked.

    THANK YOU!

I had this problem. None of my GoDaddy accounts would download. In Mail, I went to Preferences, accounts. Under the Advanced Tab, I UNchecked the "Automatically detect and maintain account settings"  then saved.  Did this for 11 accounts & everything is now working fine.

I'm having the same issue on my office iMac. After installing El Capitan, one of my email accounts (secureserver.net) was getting hung up, could not/would not verify password.  After entering password again or opening/closing mail etc. it would work, sporadically. Until yesterday when nothing worked.  I deleted the account and then tried to add it again. Couldn't verify. Called the domain provider to check on settings. Domain tech rep finds this thread (and many others) and deduces that its an El Capitan issue affecting Mail. I call Apple Support and they insist it's the domain providers problem because they haven't updated their servers or provided us with new email settings that work with the El Capitan updates. Sigh. I guess I'll be working on the old laptop for the weekend.

I'll be following along here to see if anyone finds a fix that sticks in the meantime.

I had the same problem with my secureserver.net emails. The tech rep gave me the same answers. The advice from dsrapple worked for me.

As dsrapple(and I earlier) mentioned, the password/authentication problem seems to stem from the "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" box.

    1) go into Mail> Preferences>Accounts>Advanced and uncheck the top box for "Automatically detect and maintain account settings"

    2) set the proper port, SSL, and authentication pull-down setting according to your ISP

    3) go into Mail> Preferences>Accounts>Account Information and enter the proper SMTP password
    4) go into Mail> Preferences>Accounts>Account Information>Outgoing Mail Server(SMTP)>Edit SMTP Server List and delete any unnecessary offline server listings

    5) do that for every POP account you have listed

    6) Try to send and receive emails, it should work. After working several tests, go back into Mail> Preferences>Accounts>Advanced and check the top box for "Automatically detect and maintain account settings"

    7) it should work from then on

    darkmoebius -

THANKS - this worked for me. I unchecked "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" and I connected to the POP3 server at GoDaddy.com immediately and it seems to be working now.

    Thanks a lot.

Now, recheck "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" after it has been working for a while, and all should be good from there out
