Q: Printer Driver for Canon Printer are incompatible with El Capitan

By downloading the new version of the apple operating system "El Capitan" I wondered, why the canon printer driver, which I used in "Mavericks" are incompatible with El Capitan. No one, neither the CANON Corporation nor the Apple Company, can help. For me it is unacceptable, that Apple brings up a new operating system without checking the main components of a program (e. g. printing and scanning).

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

    Well you give no specifics.

Check with Canon support for compatible El Cap drivers  not listed on there website.

Remove your printer from the printer list, and add it back in.  >Sys Pref>Printer&Scanner

    Try restarting your Router.

Check the App Store for available updates. There was one for my Canon Pixma Pro 100, it works fine.

apple made the software available to developers long before it went public. It was up to Canon to make drivers or not. Since they did make other 10.11 drivers available it may be the drivers for your printer are not ready or won't be made. In the mean time if you contact Canon they may direct you to another drive or beta driver than can be used in it's place but it's not Apples fault if you agreed to the guidelines of the 10.11 EULA

If you did not read it you are not alone, but it pretty much completely absolves Apple from any responsibility regarding fixing other peoples hardware on your system when you upgraded and it broke.

    See parts A,B and O

in the mean time never embark on a system upgrade without a backup. It's not mandatory but it should be if you wish to have an exit strategy in the event your stuck in this kind of situation.

FWIW, Canon is dropping support on many of the older printers on all new OSes,

OSX and Windows.  For example, my perfectly working i9900.  Support has been dropped

through Apple supplied drivers and through Canon itself.  Support was dropped for it back

on Windows8.1 as well.  Basically, Canon wants me to replace a perfectly working printer!!!!!!

I have a Canon  ip 7200 that I only use for disk printing. I, too had a lot of difficulty when I first upgraded to El Capitan. I looked for drivers on the UK Canon site and there was no mention for the ip7200 so I downloaded the driver for the ip7250 an they seem to be working fine. I am, however having difficulty  scanning with my Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner. I am no longer able to access it thought 3rd party software i.e. Photoshop and Abbyy Fine Reader, nor can the built in Image capture app 'see' the scanner

Something I failed to mention was that through some miracle, my i9900 was still working

with Mavericks and Yosemite.  Perhaps those updates didn't wipe out the drivers on

my machine, though I saw it did with others.

My 7200 has been the least of my Canon problems. There's a diver om their website that works. I've problems with my 8800 scanner that cost me to fix by using VueScan. I'm getting upset with Canon.

I also had this problem. Upgraded to a new iMac running OS X El Capitan, and my Canon i9900 printer software would not work. Just got off the phone with a very nice gentleman at Canon Support who helped me fix the problem. On the Canon support page for the i9900 printer drivers and downloads, will show your driver detected as OS X El Capitan. In the Operating System dropdown box, select OS X Lion v 10.7 (the last supported OS). I have been able to successfully download and install that driver and have it up and running. Hope this helps!

You could try Apple's own Canon printer drivers and see if this helps.

They can be downloaded here Canon Printer Drivers v3.3 for OS X

I just got a new 15" which only comes with El Capitan. My Canon printer at home (MP830) now no longer functions and new drivers will not be made available by Canon . . . their response is below.

My MP830 has been very good and it works brilliantly. It had a long life ahead of it. Now it will go into the growing mountain of electronic waste despite that. I don't believe that there is any technical reason why they could not have created a new driver (other brands appear to do so).

Canon fails to mention one other reason why they no longer support this and other printers - they need us all to keep buying new printers from time to time! And by withholding support, they force this change . . . it's shameful. And terrible for the planet!

The damage they do to their brand is far greater than they imagine - it takes years to build brand loyalty but it can be extinguished in a nano-second. When we next buy printers, cameras or scanners for our sizeable business, Canon will not be on the shortlist.

    D

Thank you for contacting us in regards to printer drivers for your PIXMA MP830. Unfortunately, this printer has not been verified as compatible with Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

The most up to date drivers have been tested as compatible with Mac operating systems up to version 10.8 and are available to download from the following link:

    http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/fax__multifunctionals/ inkjet/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp830.aspx?type=drivers&driverdetailid=tcm:14-83541 4&os=OS%20X%2010.8%20%28Mountain%20Lion%29&language=EN

We would like to give you some additional information regarding Canon’s policy towards the provision of drivers for new operating systems.

At the time of launch of a new product, Canon generally provides drivers so that the product in question will operate on all existing and known future planned operating systems.

When the launch of a new operating system is announced, Canon reviews our existing product range to see which of these products can be considered for the provision of compatible drivers.

There are many different factors that may influence this decision. These can include (but are not limited to) such factors as the technical compatibility between the new operating system and Canon product, the cost of driver development, the cost of supporting utility software product updates, the issue of certification of the developed driver by the operating system in question, the expected lifetime of the Canon product and costs associated with Quality Assurance.

Canon respects the right of our customers to decide to upgrade their operating systems and we attempt to make it clear at the time of purchase which products will function on which operating system.

Furthermore, we always advise our customers to check compatibility of their associated Canon products prior to the upgrade of an operating system and we make our consumer Helpdesk staff available to assist customers with such enquiries.

Thank you for having provided feedback on this matter and we appreciate you having taken the time to do so.

    The printer drivers should work.

Install them again, especially the Canon IJ driver(scanner) after an upgrade of OSX.

It looks like your printer might need a firmware upgrade. Check  http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/en/serviceDetail?id=5&sid=27&mid=0002200231&type=D  The other software should be in El Cap and you should be OK to print. I've seen Canon's comment frequently with new OS and  the printer usually works. Otherwise there are several ways of getting the printer to work. The names escape me right now so maybe  someone can contribute Software names or search these discussions because I know this has been discussed before.

Apple provide (themselves) printer drivers for the main leading brands including Canon. These drivers do not seem to be the same as those provided by the manufacturers themselves which is a good thing because the manufacturers version is either often wrapped in a poorly implemented installer, or includes a lot of bloatware that one would rather not have.

Therefore typically it is best to get drivers via Apple if possible.

I checked and the Pixma MP 830 is no longer supported by Apple, meaning Apple no longer provide drivers for it. Clearly Canon themselves also no longer support it. It would seem to be a rather old model.

Either you need to stick with an older version of OS X which still has a driver available, or you could try the considerable hassle of trying to get Gimp Print aka. Guten Print to work for it. See http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

Personally considering the cheap cost of your average inkjet printer I would simply buy a new one.

Thanks for your help - I will give that a go. But here's a question . . .  Canon's Support site detects the OSX my machine is using (El Capitan), so I assume I disregard that and select a different OSX version. I have to go back to Mountain Lion before my MP830 is supported - is that OK to download to a Mac running El Capitan?

Also, when I received the new 15" MacBookPro, I reinstalled everything from my TimeMachine backup - should not those old drivers have come across at that time? I guess they did not! Otherwise, I might have succeeded in printing from my laptop last week.

I can't try this until next weekend when i am home again - will let you know
