The update to 10.11.1 is hanging after about 3/4 of the installation, all I can see even after 8 hours is an apple and an incomplete progress bar - what can I do???

I have tried different ways to restart my MacBook Air (2011), It always comes back into the hanging installation screen...

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

I am running the 10.11.1 without problems since my last post, so I cannot test my suggestion, but I look up in the OS X Server Updates, and find out that Apple post a new OS X EL Captain Update on 27th and on 28th a Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data update!

    Screen Shot 2015-10-30 at 17.51.04.png

that should worst a try, since many tips came up that the hanging reason comes from incompatible "old apps" Kernel extensions.

    good luck and be patient

Hi, in my case, there are 3 kext, 2 from canon and 1 from HP that are doing all this mess, I delete the extensions but in time to time they appear again, I don't know how can I find wich app is doing that?

Same problem here. Updater hangs up and the drive won't boot anymore. I'm glad that that was just another partition on my external USB drive and I still have a working computer.

It also did not boot in safe mode.

"Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support"

Tried that also. The installer also hangs up, at a few % progress and "16 minutes remaining".

Sanjay, if you're still having the missing apps problem (oops, I forgot- you returned your Mac), I fixed mine by following a suggestion from Linc Davis

Re: 10.11.1 update erased all apps

    Linc said:

Although the problem is not the same, please follow the instructions in this support article to reset the Launch Services database. Instead of typing the shell command directed in the article, I suggest that you copy and paste it from the web page into the Terminal window. Make sure you select the whole line. One way to do that is by triple-clicking anywhere in the line.

    (Back to me again)

    The command is

    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed

and I started Terminal by first selecting System Preferences in the Finder. I right-clicked, then Show Package Contents->Contents->MacOS-> System Preferences  (thought I might be able to launch it). This process took about TEN MINUTES. When I double-clicked the black icon, Terminal started up. After I entered the command, logged out and in again, all the apps showed up.

    Scott,

Thanks very much for the follow-up. I definitely plan on getting a new iMac -- and am relieved to find out that this issue has been resolved. I was pretty sure the iMac I returned didn't have a hardware problem but was rattled/annoyed that my brand new iMac wasn't working and I was getting the run-around between the online AppleCare reps and the Genius bar.

All DONOT delete ANY kext files !!! I have spent two days talking to Apple as this is a very serious issue - There is NO reliable fix - Apple have asked for log file info etc etc from my mac.... There is a work around - install a known good Time Machine back up and turn off auto updates - all of them in the APP store system preferences - this ensure the OSX update 10.11.1 will not be installed .......

    best Shaun

My MBP is still working fine after removing the KEXT files, most of which referred to a  Huawei 3G dongle that I don't use now. Given that the KEXT files were flagged as not being loadable, I don't see any risk in removing them, I had obviously backed up before removal in any case.

Understand and you should be ok - I have similar files but altogether I have 64 files in total - Apple just said wait until they investigate - it looks like a serious issue though

It kind of worked for me... except that SMC reset made absolutely no difference.

Instead of cloning the disk, (etc...) as "franciscofrombaltimore" suggests, I entered recovery mode (Cmd+R), opened the Terminal, went to /Volume/MYDISKSNAME/System/Library/Extensions and moved some old extensions (from 2009, 2011, ...) to other directory (ie: mkdir ../old_exts ; mv HuaweiDataCard* ../old_exts). Rebooted and I was able to finish the update process and log in normally. Hope it helps somebody.

I am having the same issue, mid 2012 MBP with no issues at all until I decided to install this update.  Stuck at 3/4, even after resetting PRAM and using recovery.

Well guys, as you all may know I've had this same issue for a few days now. I've been trying all of the suggestions especially the ones from franciscofrombaltimore and dfoliveira which I couldn't succeed thru Terminal. This is what I did and I hope it helps someone out there. I was using a cloned HDD before the update. I booted thru my original HDD, located the problem HDD, .../System/Library/Extensions and moved all the older extensions but 2015 to folder. Rebooted from the problem HDD and BOOM!!! it works. Moved all the old extensions back to the original folder and BINGO, it works again!!! I have rebooted several times and I am absolutely fine. Thanks to franciscofrombaltimore and dfoliveira, your suggestions were genius.
