Q: After installing 10.11, Mac won't Restart or Shut down

I installed OS X 10.11 on a SSD, and although it took a while to update from 10.10.5, when I try to reboot the Mac Pro (black), everything but the desktop pic disappears, and the Mac won't restart or shut-down. It hangs. The only available feature is the Dock and the only way around it is by pressing the Power button for 5 seconds to turn it off and pressing it again to turn it on.

I know a lot of people are having issue's. Any thoughts as to why this occurring?

Thanks!

    I'm usually pretty good with this stuff. I was testing a product in my studio which included specific software app's, drivers and an ethernet connection. When I stopped using it, I forgot to remove the drivers, KEXT, etc... resulting in a hang when I tried to reboot or shut-down after switching from Yosemite to EC.

    I experienced the Shutdown / Restart Problem after upgrading to El Capitan.  The following fixed my problem(s):

    Go to System Preferences->Users & Groups->Login Items.

    I selected to remove ALL Login Items except iTunes Helper.

    Use a Force Shutdown.

    Turned on the computer and was able to Shutdown or Restart normally.

    The alternative was to turn off Login Items one by one to identify the culprit.  (This may necessitate more forced shutdowns).

    I am able to still access the programs that were listed in my Login Items, simply by starting the applications.

    Hope this helps!!!

    I did remove all the Login Items, but that wasn't the problem. I had to remove some out dated KEXT files. Thanks!
