Q: 12 rMB intermittently won't wake from sleep or turn on

So this is very odd!

I have a 12 inch retina MacBook (OS 10.11.1). When is been sleeping for a while or even shut down for a while (i.e. a few hours) it won't wake from sleep or power on after pressing the power button. When its like this if you plug in/un-plug the power cable it chimes in acknowledgement of the power cable being plugged in but it won't power on. It then powers on after about half an hour. When it does power on the battery is at 100%. I've tried resetting the SMC. I'll take it into an Apple store but there's a 2 week wait at the moment.

In the interim any ideas?

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

    Hi,

My new 1.2Ghz Retina MacBook died last week and I had to take it to the Glasgow Apple Store for repair. It wouldn't start up at all, turns out the issue was the logic board and it was replaced.

Yours is the only other case I can see where a similar incident has occurred and I wonder how widespread this fault is?

You can run diagnostics on it by starting it up with Option and D held in, might at least give you a starting point for troubleshooting with them when you get there. Make sure the charger is plugged in when you do this, so you don't get any false positives.

    I've now solved the issue!

I was using a sleeve with a magnetic latch closure and was using the machine sat on top of the sleeve. this was clearly causing the machine to think the lid was still closed and prevent wake from sleep/boot. I've now stopped using the sleeve and the issue has gone!

I've been having the same problem, and I'm going to try to avoid the sleeve while the computer is in use - thanks! But I also had trouble getting the machine started up while I was in the Apple Store, when the magnetic sleeve was NOT sitting underneath the computer, so I'll have to wait and see how things develop.

Oh my gosh - you saved me!!!  I had the exact same problem yesterday and I blamed the little USB-C adapter I'd just bought.  I was sitting at a table with my Macbook and the screen suddenly went black and would NOT come back on!  I gave up on it and carried it to another room and later it woke up just fine.  And again it died when I plugged that adapter back in (on top of my InCase magnetic-closure case.

The crazy thing was I switched to my husband's Macbook and the SAME thing happened to it! It would be fine, and then suddenly go black when I moved it suddenly. I couldn't think for the life of me what caused BOTH Macs to fail at the same time.  And of course he has the InCase magnetic closure case as well.

I'm so happy I could virtually kiss you alexmac27!!!  I will talk about this on my podcast for sure and give you credit for the discovery. I'm going to tell InCase as well so maybe they can warn people.  Curious if you used the same case as me?
