What exactly are you trying to accomplish by connecting them?

To send files, to your Mac, you can use AirDrop, if your Mac is a supported model.
Use AirDrop to send content to/from your Mac - Apple Support
To send items to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you need a 2012 or newer Mac model with OS X Yosemite or later, excluding the Mac Pro (Mid 2012).

For the record, it works for me just fine. Mac Mini 2013 El Capitan, iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2.

This is what I am able to see, the iPhone is not been discovered:
My iPhone 5S, my iPad mini, my husband's iPhone 6+ cannot be discovered from my Mac.
Block All Incoming Connections are turned off in Privacy Settings!
