Q: bootcamp won't create partition - no error message

Hi all,

I am trying to install Windows 10 on a fairly new macbook pro retina and am having trouble getting past the creation of a Windows partition.  Unlike the others I have read here, I get no error message at all.  When I start Bootcamp and click continue, I check all 3 boxes.  Once Bootcamp is done downloading everything it gets to the Create a Partition for Windows screen.  I choose 200GB for the Windows side leaving 800GB for the Mac.  When I click Install, the progress bar goes to 100% immediately with the text above it saying "Status: Partitioning Disk..." and then sits there indefinitely.  I've left it for literally 2 hours while watching a movie, making sure the computer never goes to sleep and nothing changes.

Not sure what technical info is needed, but in System Info the hardware overview shows:

  Model Name: MacBook Pro

  Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,3

  Processor Name: Intel Core i7

  Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz

  Number of Processors: 1

  Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

  L3 Cache: 6 MB

  Memory: 16 GB

Let me know if any other info is needed and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Tim

    1. Can you check Applications -> Utilities -> Console logs for any disk-related messages?

    2. Run a Disk Utility Repair and retry BCA.

    3. From OS X Terminal, please post the output of the following commands

         diskutil list

         diskutil cs list

You may have other issues, but this will provide good information for your 2013/2014 Mac.

Do you any external disks connected? These messages are expected for USB/FW disks. disk0 is internal, which is where Windows will get installed. Remove all external storage except the USB Install flash drive. Do not use hubs or external USB HDDs to build a USB installer.

No other drives connected, nothing plugged into the USB slots at all.  I had already unplugged the USB Drive that BCA made.

    Is Disk4 the Windows ISO?

    What is Disk5?

Can you boot in Safe Mode - Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support - and boot normally, and try BCA?

Your 11,3 are 2013/2014 models. Are you using a USB Installer or a USB and an external Optical drive?

First of all, thank you for all your help on this.  I appreciate all the time you have spent looking into my issue!

I honestly don't know what the other drives are.  I am unfamiliar with the way Mac handles files/partitions or whatever on the drive.  There is only one hard drive on the laptop, and there isn't anything plugged in, so all I can guess is it's some remnant from trying this several times?

I did the safe mode boot and then normal boot as you suggested, but still get the same result when running BCA.

I have tried both with an optical disk and with USB but neither way got me past the partition stage.  Currently I am just doing the USB method.  I did delete the iso file that I had downloaded since it seems to now all be on the USB drive along with the support files.  So now, when I go to run BCA I just uncheck the first two boxes and just check the bottom one to install windows.

Still though, when I get to the partition section, I just choose 200 GB for the Windows side and click install.  The progress bar goes to max immediately and never changes.  If I have the console open when I do it, I can see as soon as I click Install, the following line pops up:

    11/1/15 2:57:51.000 PM kernel[0]: msdosfs_mount: invalid total sectors (0)

Seems like this must be the issue, but I don't know what it means.

The first two options (Create USB and Download Software...) build a USB Installer for Windows using a Windows ISO and Windows Support Software. The last option needs to have a USB built using the first options to be plugged in.

The error messages indicates that the USB is either corrupted or not formatted correctly. If you insert the USB and erase and format is as MSDOS-FAT, does it work? If yes, click on the first two options, and provide a valid ISO, which will create the USB Installer. Open the USB after these two steps to check if it has files on the USB.

The two disk4 and disk5 are disk images. Depending on version of OS X, you may not need a USB to install Windows. Please see https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/assistant/6.0/ for reference.

Yes, that's what I did the first time.  Inserted the USB drive and had all 3 boxes checked.  I pointed to the iso file I downloaded to the HD, then it reformatted the USB drive, downloaded the support files and wrote everything to the USB.  Since I had that done after the first time, I just checked the bottom box only on subsequent attempts.  I even tried two different USB drives (starting from scratch when trying the new USB drive) in case there was something wrong with the first one.

I haven't tried formatting it to MSDOS-FAT first, but can try that now.  I can, however, see all the files on the USB drive if I go to it in finder and all seems fine.  So, you think the error in my last post is in reference to the USB drive?  I assumed it had to do with the hard drive that BCA was trying to partition.

I'll see what happens if I format first and let you know.

    Thanks again!

Do not manually copy anything to the USB, let BCA do it. Also, please unmount the Windows ISO and move it to Documents folder (instead of Desktop).

Your Mac can also install without using a USB, but that depends on the version of Windows you want to install.

Windows 7 is supported on Macs listed in - Install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support

Windows 8+ is supported on Macs listed in - Use Windows 8.1 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support

Windows 10 is supported on Macs listed in - Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support

I didn't.  It did everything on its own. Going to try the non-USB method now.
