Apple WatchToni what did you try to do when you started up using Command-R? About the screens you see when your Mac starts up - Apple Support

Nov 1, 2015 5:45 AM in response to Mike Sombrioby Toni Valenstein1,Not sure what you're asking. I started up while holding down the Command-R. Still got the white screen with circle and line.
This morning I turned off my wireless keyboard and plugged in a USB keyboard and held down the Option key while starting. I immediately got a screen showing two drives. I clicked on Recovery drive, The white screen with Apple logo came up, then the time line. The time line is at the end now and nothing else is happening. It's well over an hour, the iMac is running hot, so I now it's still trying to do something???

Apple WatchI misunderstood, I thought you were able to start into recovery, my bad.
Your 2009 iMac came with install discs. Insert disc one of your original gray install set and restart while holding the C key. Choose your language and click continue, at the next screen click the Utilities menu in the top menu bar and select Disk Utility. Try to repair your hard drive.

Nov 1, 2015 4:36 PM in response to Mike Sombrioby Toni Valenstein1,Thanks for your answer. Only problem is - the closest Apple store is 2 hrs. away and the only reliable authorized repair (as of a couple of weeks ago) was not doing Apple repairs any longer. I have a real dilemma here! I was told that the HD would be about $150,if I purchased is myself, but then it would cost about $100 for installation. Certainly better than a new iMac, but there is probably no place to have it installed?

Apple WatchToni, use this link to look for an AASP https://locate.apple.com/ I thought the nearest to me was about 45 minutes away but found one almost right around the corner.
If you're up to it you can replace the hard drive yourself https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel_27%22_EMC_2309_and_2374
Your BEST source for the correct parts and tech support is OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/

Nov 2, 2015 4:47 AM in response to Mike Sombrioby Toni Valenstein1,★HelpfulI'm living down here (Hilton Head) for 9 yrs. and I know where the closest repair is. Unfortunately, they may no be repairing Apple any longer. The next closest it about 40 min. away and they have done more harm than good to many Apple computers. I'm on the ed. committee of our computer club (over 3000 members). I teach courses on all Apple devices and do private tutoring and trouble shooting. I probably can replace the HD myself, but I don't think I want to. I appreciate the website, advice and all you offered.
I think I'll call the trusted repair shop to find out if they're still in the "Apple" business. Get a price from them. I will also get in touch with Apple to see what they would charge.
Thank you for all your help....
