Nov 2, 2015 6:17 AM in response to vdotmatrixby keg55,You will want to format your external back up drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with the GUID partition table so it's bootable. If you already have everything over on your Mac; then use Time Machine to back up your Mac. This will back up everything. Sort of like an image back up in Windows. If you're doing your TM back up locally, then that external drive is bootable and will boot into the OS X Utilities menu just like the Recovery HD does allowing you to use Disk Utility to manage drives, Restore from a back up, etc.
