Q: Can't pair iPhone via Bluetooth

Hey Guys,

I have a new 11" Air which is incredible but for the life of me I can't get Bluetooth pairing to work with my iPhone 4 so I can tether.

It pairs the device in System Preferences but I try to connect them I get to errors.

If I connect from the MBA I get an out of range error and If I connect it from the iPhone I get a message saying that the device is not supported - and it prompts me to remove the device from the Phone?

Both devices are up-to-date and I have bluetooth working with the iPhone and my MBP.

Tried resetting PRAM but still no luck.

Any ideas?

I used to be able to tether my iPhone 3G with my MacBook Pro (circa 2008) via bluetooth but when I ungraded to iPhone 4G I started getting an error message "MacBook not supported" on my iPhone.   I was still able to tether by plugging the iPhone in with a USB cable.  I took my hardware to the genius bar and they determined that the bluetooth version on my laptop is version one which is not supported by version three on my iPhone.  They are incompatable and simply will not work.  They did offer me a great solution, though, and that is to just set up my iPhone as a personal hotspot using wifi.  I was under the impression that the "wifi" in the iPhone settings was the wifi network in my house.  This is not the case, if you set up a personal hotspot using wifi, your iPhone becomes the "modem".  I am now able to connect my laptop (via the cellular network on my cell phone) to the net when I'm out and about and do not have access to a wifi hotspot etc.

Jasmin,  I failed to pair my new MAB13 with my old iPh4S - but your SOP works wonders !

obviously a conflict WiFi - BT prevents "total partnership by all channels"

I have the same problem; I can't pair my iPhone 5 (iOS 7) and iMac (Mavericks) via Bluetooth. Just after a sec when iMac finds iPhone and shows "connected" it changes to " not connected". It says make sure network access is enabled, but there is no setting to change network access for Blouetooth.

My purpose for making pair is using iPhone as remote for Keynote. I do not need internet sharing. Do u have any solution?

I had the same issue trying to bluetooth pair Ipad Air with Iphone 4S.... I tried everything to get the two units to pair together as they wouldnt even see each other and they were both sitting along side each other. Then I thought because the Ipad air was straight out of the box I have to set the Ipad air up using Itunes etc but even setting it up on that still didnt work. My last crack of the whip I thought I would try from a different angle and I found that I had to do the following to get the pair

Put both devices in airplane mode

turn on bluetooth on both devices

turn on personal hotspot on the Iphone 4S

turn off airplane mode on the Iphone 4S

Turn off the Wifi on the Iphone 4S

as soon as I did that the ipad air straight away saw the Iphone and commenced pairing and then the Iphone saw the Ipad and the 2 were then paired...

Both now see each other when bluetooth is turned On and Off

    I hope that helps others

    Amazing! Thank you!

How you ever worked that out I will never know but it worked!

Apple seem to think they are trying to create the successor to the Enigma code machine, not a consumer product

Hi all, as an additional step, I had to also turn off the wifi on my mac air for this to work with my iphone 5.

    Thanks markspark!
