Q: Will doing a fresh install of 10.10 speed up my mac?

Hi

I have a very tired MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009), 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running 10.10.5. I installed a new hard drive a while ago to try to speed the computer up. I have tried running OnyX to give the machine new life and it helps but it is running very slowly.

If I buy a new hard drive and do a fresh install of 10.10 and then install that hard drive will that help please?

Thanks

Rich

It depends upon what may be slowing the Mac down.

The best way to speed up an old macbook is buying an SSD harddrive. These are more expensive than conventional spinning harddrives but offer much faster performances.

A fresh install of the OS may help as well.

Good sites to buy mac compatible SSDs are OWC and Crucial.

    Hope this helps!

Rid your MBP of all elements of Mackeeper.  It is essentially a scam product:

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3040

Your MBP is begging for more RAM.  You can install 8 GB.  The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

    Ciao.
