Q: Will switching hard drives fix my computer?

So I have a 2013 macbook pro and I let my friend borrow it. When he brought it back the password was changed and he says he dosent remember what he changed it to. I tried resetting the hard drive but this weurd screen pops up. Its like a black screen with a white lock and box to enter text. I tried to type a password in the box bit it wouldnt allow me to type any text in. I have an older macbook from like 2007 in my house, if I were to put the hard drive into my new one would it fix mt problem?

It might. Do you have a backup?

Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

I Dont have a backup but that's pretty much the least of my worries. So I should switch the hard drives and that will make it work again?

You can't.  The 2007 MBP has a conventional HDD.  A 2013 MBP is a retina with PCI SSD storage.  These are two physically different pieces of hardware.

    Ciao.

Alright but the question still stands, will a mew hard drive fix the problem? If it's necessary I'll go buy a new one and replace it. Also, I think i have a 2009 macbook air, but im gonna assume that switching those wouldnt work?

Have you done what Eric Root has suggested?  That should be your first step.

Also, I think i have a 2009 macbook air, but im gonna assume that switching those wouldnt work?

That assumption is correct.  The drives are NOT compatible.

    Ciao.
