Q: Mailboxes and iOS9 issue

Hi,

Last week I updated my iPhone 6 to iOS 9 and started having the following problem with my primary POP account.

Will download email (entire email, including attachments) to my phone and at some point then download the same email to my computer (MBP, MS Outlook). Outlook is set to delete messages from the mail server once downloaded to my computer. I have been doing this since my first iPhone (March 2011) and have never had a problem until last week.

After updating the iOS, the content of the messages that I have left on my phone disappear within a couple of hours of being downloaded to my computer. I get the following message: This message has not been downloaded from the server. I have checked the mailbox account settings and nothing seems to have been changed from where they where prior to the update.

This problem only shows up on emails left on my phone from the last 30 days or so. I have earlier messages from March, 2015 and before that the contents have not been deleted. Very weird and frustrating.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks.

iPhone 6, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Update to my post last night. I spoke too soon. This morning many of yesterday's messages are now unavailable with the now familiar message. Apologies for getting people's hopes up - a good lesson for me in waiting before posting. It took over 24 hours for the issue to re-manifest itself. i had cleared my inbox following the upgrade and therefore I can categorically say that these are emails that were received post upgrade. All of the other posters are correct, the issue remains at 9.1. Sorry for posting duff information!

As penance for incorrectly calling the resolution of the issue following the iOS 9.1 upgrade I have spent the evening drafting a new fault description for the apple feedback site.  Feel free to copy from this post and submit as many times as you like at http://www.apple.com/feedback/

    Subject:

iOS 9 issue with pop/smtp email

    Description:

Following upgrade to iOS 9, the content of emails downloaded to pop/smtp email accounts are randomly lost after roughly 24 hrs. The email content is replaced by the message: This message has not been downloaded from the server. The same email accounts on an iMac running OS X Yosemite & another iOS devices still running iOS 8 do not exhibit this behaviour. The 4 iOS devices upgraded to iOS 9 (iphone 6 & 5c, iPad 3 & air2) all exhibit the same behaviour. The same behaviour has been confirmed at iOS 9.0, 9.01, 9.02 and 9.1. Unlike ios8, when mobile data is not available on the iOS9 devices image content is lost from downloaded emails.Loss of the email content is unrelated to emails presence on the email provider's server. This iOS9 bug has resulted in the loss of irreplaceable user email data.

Thanks. Have done just that.. the issue is so frustrating.. setup my iPad with a POP account so I could keep certain messages there and on my desktop.. worked great for all this time, and now the same exact issue as described above.

    Thanks

I still have the same problem after downloading 9.1. I am able to download the email and open them up, but once I close the mail program and then go back to it, that same email's content can no longer be downloaded off the server and the content disappears.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem as the rest of you guys with my two POP3- accounts. Exchange server, gmail etc. work fine. Just spoke to Apple Support and they obviously had no idea what I was talking about. Just suggested I re-install the two accounts.

Let's hope there's a fix in next version of IOS 9.

One thing I noticed today, that I did not see in ios 9.01:

The message content is still actually in the phone (at least on mine).

I changed my mail settings to preview 5 lines - and the first part of the message appears in the message list. When you select the message, it still says 'message not downloaded from server'. So this is even more irritating, because it means the stuff is still there.

Also, now it is only some of the messages that show not downloaded when selected.

Maybe this provides some sort of opening for a workaround? I tried forwarding the message to myself but that doesn't get the content back.

We have this problem too (a company in Germany)!

All our field worker do not have any mobile access to emails which moved into the archive.

The German apple support  I contacted indeed told me they are still working on it,

but I do not really believe in it!

    What a great disaster!!!

I spoke to Apple so they wanted me to replace the pop account with IMAP. I said I won't because then when I delete my iPhone messages, it will be deleted on my desktop. This doesn't happen with pop accounts. I have to wait for a fix from iPhone.

I like the iPhone and hate Apple for doing updates and not testing them.  I lost the use of my Audi hands free after one update and the guy in the Apple store said that it was certain that Audi had changed their software and it was nothing to do with Apple.  Audi denied updating this part of their system but two Apple updates later, the system started to work.  Now we have lost our emails after the update to IOS9.0 and two revisions later they have messed up again by not getting it right.  Maybe they should leave it to the 15 and 16 year old who were arrested over the TalkTalk fiasco - they could well understand the software and put it right.

.This convinces me that I should not update my desktop to any Apple system if they issue updates which have such major faults and don't correct them quickly.  They do not deserve to have the loyalty of their customers.

It is up to Audi to keep their software compatible with the system they choose to use. If you wish to stay compatible with a car manufacturer, don't upgrade the OS.

Auto manufacturers rarely bother to keep their systems up to date (and VW/Audi are hardly honest about stuff like that, unless they are caught cheating)

After updating to iOS9, 9,01, 9.02 and 9.1 I've not experienced any issues with the hands free functionality in my 2 Audi A6s.  I only wish that I could state that for my email.

When I spoke to Apple support today for the third time in 3 days, they claimed that my telecom operator had probably changed something in their settings. "Please call them and make sure your settings in the iPhone and iPad are correct." I already knew they are correct but called anyway just to make sure. This is definitely a problem coming from the latest IOS update and not something Apple can blame on other companies.
