Q: Memory upgrade on iMac 27

I have a mid-2011 iMac 27 with a 27 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and current memory of 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3.  I have just recently upgraded to El Capitan OS.  I multi-task a lot an would like to increase memory to at least 8 GB though I would prefer to go ahead and get 8 additional GB to go to 12 while I am at it.  Looking for guidance as I have never upgraded the memory.  Do the new memory chips need to be 1333 MHz as well? Is there any restriction on the type of new memory I install.  From what I can gather, it is a fairly simple task to insert the new memory.

I would appreciate any help and/or suggestions anyone has for me.

Thank you,

Cris
