Q: el capitan's boot camp assistant unable to install windows 10

My config : a new macbook air 11" (MacBook Air 7,2) preloaded with OS X Yosemite (10.9.x), soon updated to El Capitan "GM" then El Capitan (15A284).

Problem : unable to install Windows 10 due to numerous bugs and problems.

The new "Boot Camp Assistant" of OS X El Capitan offer to prepare a somewhat nice temporary Windows 10 installation partitions (OSX RESERVED?) to streamline the windows 10 installation. But it doesn't work! When Windows 10 installer starts it claims "a missing driver is needed to continue", driver that is nowhere to be found. (as I read elsewhere on the net, it happens that the SSD driver found in the last Bootcamp ESD is at fault).

The problem is :

- I can't install WIN10 as is recommended by Apple

- I can't easily or "legitimately" alter the "OS X RESERVED" partition before windows 10 installation (the time is short between end of download and reboot).

- This "OS X RESERVED" partition is erased automatically (which were nice if win10 install had worked) AND "BootCamp Assistant" restart all the process each time (ssd partition - win10 iso lookup and file copy - download drivers…) - It take roughly 30min each time (this download is oddly sssloooow).

AND - I can't create a USB drive which would work for sure!

(PS - Since I downloaded 2 times the Win10 iso directly from Microsoft, I haven't a single doubt of this file integrity).

My question : who else encounter this problem? And is there a known solution?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

It come from some flaw in the new BCA process : the Win10 installation partition made by the BCA (OSXRESERVED - disk0s3 - temporary and erased at the following restart of El Capitan) is unable to properly function (somehow the AppleSSD is at some point not loaded correctly by the Win10 installer- You must give a proper driver from a external drive during the installation process - in my experience the driver found in the WindowsSupport.dmg worked).

The AppleSSD64 (and AppleSSD.sys) is an unsigned driver in BC6. It is a well documented problem in [urgent]get "appleSSD.sys" error when installing windows 7 through bootcamp thread and elsewhere. W10 Driver Signature enforcement causes it to be not loaded causing problems during SSD functions. On older Macs, it can be safely removed. On 2015 Macs, it causes pain and grief. I have a bug report (22285185 - 21 Aug 2015) and provided documentation to Apple.

Why no one from Apple is not trying to solve this problem. I own a macbook air 11 early 2015 and I have the same problem. I can't install windows 10. Make something to understand the causes of the problem.

You will need to ask Apple Technical Support how they plan to address this specific issue. I have already reported a bug and know what the work-around is.

Hello i hope you were able to solve the problems. but if not this is what you need to do..

start BCA download drivers through Bootcamp assistant. open the driver folder delete everything inside except the XML file. download old bootcamp drivers from the link

    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721?locale=tr_TR&viewlocale=en_US

and and copy the driver files from this one to new drivers folder.

like old drivers with a new xml file.

I've got the same issue. I'm getting the "media driver missing" when attempting to install Windows 10 64-bit on my Macbook Air 11" (early-2015) using Boot Camp Assistant.

I suspect this problem stems from the PCIe SSD which sits in the early-2015 Macbook Air machines.

Ok, solved it. Perhaps we were having different issues but here's what I did...

On my Macbook Air 11" (early-2015) I can download the drivers from the Boot Camp Assistant's file menu and then copy the drivers onto an USB stick. When installing Windows 10 through the Boot Camp Assistant, I get a message about some "media driver missing", and I can manually choose to search the WindowsSupport/$WinPEDriver$/AppleSSD64 folder on the USB stick. This causes the installation to proceed and I'm now running Windows 10 on my Macbook Air 11" (early-2015).

    Hi Fredrik,

I'm really close to getting Windows 10 to work on my Macbook Air 11" (early-2015 with el Capitan). I tried to do what you have suggested, but every time I try to access the USB stick during the installation process to manually install drivers it either wants me to format the USB or it does not let me access it even though it shows up as on option on the branch for manual selection. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Also, did you download the drivers from the Action tab (on the Apple bar - near top left of the screen) in Bootcamp Assistant?

    Thank you,

    mbayt

I didn't see it mentioned here, but I had success with the solution from this answer on superuser.com:

    Here my steps:

    1. Start the install and go to the partition selection screen
    2. Press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt window
    3. Execute the following commands:

      diskpart

select disk 0 (assuming 0 is the disk where you created the bootcamp partition)

select partition 4 (assuming 4 is your bootcamp partition)

      format fs=NTFS label="Windows 8" (I didn’t use QUICK)

      exit

      exit

    4. Press refresh and you should be able to select the partition

I used a FAT32-formatted USB stick from SanDisk (Cruzer Blade 8 GB model). You can format your USB stick using the Disk Utility.

    Yes.

    Hi,

Could write here exact names and location of catalogues you've moved to USB Stick (and what was deleted there) ?

I've tried few combination but I failed - nor BCA couldn't find installation disk with W10 after the procedure nor later during install of W10 it couldn't find the driver...

    Dear All,

Sadly, it's too late for me when i found this discussion T_T

I found the same problem with you guys yesterday...

I've tried to download another Win10 x64 ISO file as well from microsoft website.. but the problem still there..

my Macbook Pro Retina 15" - Mid July 2015 still unable to install Win10 Using bootcamp...

and my last attempt even creates more problem for me....

after several try and error, i found 5 other partition on my SSD...

using Disk Utility i try to erase all the partition... and intend to restore them back to my Primary Partition (Macintosh HD)

    a. 1 partition of 130 GB i set before for the bootcamp drive.. for installing win10

    b. 1 partition of 8 GB named MACOSRESERVED (or so... deleted already)

    c. the other 3 small partition (less than 500MB) that showed up during my BCA Session to install Win10 which i don't really understand what files inside these partition

then when i choose to delete partition from disk utility, i can only delete the partition b (8GB) then the capacity merged back to my primary Macintosh HD.

but for the other 4 partitions, i couldn't restore them back to my Macintosh HD...

I also try to use the BCA to restore them back into the original SSD Capacity, buat always failed..

    Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 5.40.46 PM.png

all of these 4 partitions are already formatted into Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume...

but still i couldn't manage to restore them back into one single 512GB Capacity as it was before

    Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 5.33.50 PM.png

    Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 5.40.01 PM.png

is there any other way to restore this SSD into 512GB?

i want to try installing Win 10 using tricks i found here, but at this state i couldn't even use BCA to do anything...

well, my last option is to do a fresh install my El Capitan then re-do the boot camp sequence

On the time machine, my last backup is still at the point where my SSD is 512GB in one single partition...

is it possible for me to active restore using TM without fresh install and get back my 512GB SSD?

    Please advice,

Thank you so much in advanced guys!

Please do not Kill (even) 4Fun.

The reason you see these small partitions is because you may an external storage device connected while installing Windows. Windows installer gets confused.

If you have a backup, please see failed windows 8.1 installation through bootcamp as an option.
