Q: so i have only a white screen on my iMac?

I came in this am to use the mac as per usual only to see that it had completely shut down. normally it just goes to sleep.. As the day has progressed trying to start up in recovery mode i now have a white screen? it has the start up chime but thats it? help

Have you tried an SMC and PRAM reset? Sometimes helps:
iMac SMC and PRAM reset

I had the same problem several times when i did a OSX uprade
Solution for me is: Restart, hold shift (Installation continues). Log in. Restart in normal mode. Done
