Q: MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) crashes continuously

My MacBook crashes continuously for about a month now (started while using OS X Lion). My thought was to wait for Mountain Lion, make a clean install (formatting HDD) and then this should be resolved. Well, it didn't work. Still crashing while using more than 3-4 apps at the same time. All updates installed.

I really hope that someone is able to help me here. I already tried to run the Apple Hardware Test, but it's not available on my machine...

My guess it's that this might be a hardware problem, as it happened with Lion before.

This is the error report from the last crash (20 minutes ago):

I have the same Apple factory defect 2010 MacBook pro crashing continously cronic problem.

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

    OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C1514)

Applecare refuses to acknowledge the problem exists and will not help. I am extremely disappointed and disgusted with Apple's customer service. They expect customers to throw away what they have and purchase new products every 3 years.

I am also hoping that Apple will do the right thing and repair / replace my 2010 MacBook. The problem started when I “upgraded” to 10.8 and continued thru 10.10 making the computer useless. I reverted a partition back to 10.6 which has less of a problem but still happens. I am very disappointed with Apple’s lack of respect for loyal customers.

I just had the same experience - took it to the Genius Bar and they said the logic board will need to be replaced and I had to pay for the full cost. How did you manage to convince them to replace it for free?

    Hello,

I have the same problem , Apple refuses to change the motherboard , I suggest you send a letter to Ireland to complain, it's a shame . This notebook cost € 1,500 . After all these years , 4 iphones , 2 ipads , 2 macbook apple let me down . I lost confidence . They tell me that the repair is about 600€.

    Shameful.

Yeah mine's about the same. It still works with 4GB and I can't really see much difference, oh well. I'll use it until it's unusable to spite them Otherwise they're pretty good manufacturers considering it's been 5 years. Also they said my MacBook is so old it's soon going to be considered a legacy device and won't be looked after by the Genius bar. That's fine though considering their only solutions have been for me to pay hundreds. The Genius staff aren't stupid and point out that it's probably not worth it on such an old machine, so I'll give them that.

PS besides from the MSI afterburner underclock trick I turned off windows aero, avoided google chrome (just use internet explorer) and also switched the slider in NVIDEA video controller to "performance". Now it works really good compared to before.

I'm lucky I just need the CPU and just use this machine for evantual windows stuff.

    Hope this helps.

I'm running MBP Mid-2010, and I've had this problem for several weeks now.  There would be very random black screen reboots of the machine.  I've tried this solution today, and it seems to be helping (no crashes yet).

    1.  Install gfxCardStatus 2.1 (https://software.com/mac/apps/gfxcardstatus/2.1).  Set it Integrated Only.  Then go to Preferences > Advanced and check "Restore last used mode at startup".  Also, check "Use power source-based switching" and select Integrated for both battery and plugged in.  This will force your mac to use the video on the motherboard, reducing the chance of gpu crashes.  Make sure to use version 2.1 or earlier.

    2.  Install nVidia CUDA for Mac (http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/Mac /Quadro_Certified/7.5.21/cudadriver-7.5.21-macos.dmg&lang=us&type=Other)

    3.  Upgrade to El Capitan and make sure everything is latest.

For me it was a faulty RAM slot (the slot closer to the keyboard) so only using the good slot prevented any crashes. I sometimes got 3 beeps on restart which was the sign for memory issues also. Haven't had many issues since.

Dude! I can't believe it. This started happening to my MBP about 2 years ago and got the the point that I really couldn't use it any more. They told me I needed a new motherboard which I almost bought for $400 because it's an i7, but this totally worked. Not one crash in over 7 hours of constant use. I'm amazed. 2 years! I am wondering (in more detail) what exactly it's doing to stop it from crashing. Am I losing any processing power... not that I care at this point. I'm just curious.

    Thanks again.

I followed the instructions from the post 2 above mine by szmatchy:

    Good luck."
