Q: My MacBook has a grey screen after el Capitan download.

I have a Mac book air 13" from last year and downloaded the new operating system El Capitan last week . In the middle or at the end of downloading the computer froze and now I have just a grey screen. Tried switching it off and apple light goes off on top but when I hold down the on /off  key it lights up and nothing else.

    Hey there Helalar,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I understand correctly, your MacBook Air shows a blank gray screen after upgrading to OS X El Capitan. If you haven't already, try adjusting the brightness of your display as described in the article below.

About the screens you see when your Mac starts up - Apple Support

    Blank screen

After the power-on self test is complete, your Mac sends a video signal to your connected displays. The display screen might appear black or gray at this point in the startup sequence and the display's backlight should turn on. If you don't see an image appear on your screen after a few moments, try turning up your display's brightness. If you're using an external display, make sure it's connected properly and turned on.

    So long.
