Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your El Capitan upgrade didn't finish and your Mac isn't starting up.
First, Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up using the steps below, and see the link to get help with the results of this test.
Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.
- Start or restart your Mac.
- Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
- Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.
To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.
If you don't hear a startup chime after pressing the power key, see what to do if your Mac won't turn on.
If your Mac doesn't start up when using safe mode, next check the "Other screens you might see" section in About the screens you see when your Mac starts up.
Is your Mac starting up to one of those screens? If so, you'll find more steps to try in the About the screens... article as well.
Let us know if the steps above helped. If not, replying with more info can help the community suggest additional steps to try. For example:
- Which steps did you try and what were the results?
- What happens when you turn on your Mac currently?
- Which screen is your Mac starting up to (if any)?
Sincerely.
