Q: Airplay issue with El Capitan

Having a reliability issue while using airplay with el capitan to apple tv 3! it will either work after a long delay (and not turn off) or won't work at all. My iPhone 6S iOS 9.0.2 works fine with airplay and my home network is not an issue. Anyone else have this issue?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Was testing the process with another teacher's Macbook Pro 13" retina. They have 10.9.5 and it works flawlessly connecting to the ATV3.

I've also noticed my iPad Air w/ 9.1 takes much longer to connect via Airplay to the ATV3. Even requiring the 4 digit code when this has all been disabled on the ATV 3.

Apple 10.11.x has been nothing but problems. My firewall is off. Everything is updated. Restarted. Power cycled.  What gives?

Having the same problem with my ATV2. Was on the phone with support for almost 4 hours - they tried everything. Evidently they didn't know it was an issue with El Capitan, or so it appears. Had to downgrade system and back to normal for my mac. Still can't use airplay with IOS devices tho.

    Hi

I actually resolved my issue by upgrading the ATV2 to the latest.  I had issues with the upgrade so did a restore via iTunes where is downloads the latest version and restores it to that.

    Works perfectly now.

Same issue here. MacBook Pro 15" mid 2014 running 10.11.1 and Apple TV 3 running 7.2

Everything is up-to-date. Firewall is off.

I can start AirPlay and see the other desktop in my TV. No problem with that... Also can AirPlay from iTunes.

But when I try to AirPlay audio/video from other apps, like VLC or even Photos, AirPlay crashes and stops.

Everything was working OK with Yosemite... I guess maybe upgrading was a mistake. Disappointed.

I will appreciate any tip or help. Thanks.

Sort of same issue here: videos keep rebuffering, and sometimes it just stops playing randomly. Now here's the interesting kicker: I also have a Chromecast and it suffers from the same issues. Tried on my wife's laptop which is on Yosemite still and everything works without a glitch. My guess is that there's something going quite wrong with the network daemon or settings.

Do you guys have third-party VPN software running? I have the Private Internet Access OpenVPN client.

Hopefully someone will figure it out soon.

Bingo for me: restarting and not running the VPN software made it all go back to normal. Add that to the list of things that might make it go wrong.

Adding to this matter...there seems to be a real issue with iOS 9 devices and talking to ATV3... over our school network.

What used to work flawlessly has been plagued with issues now. I do not have any screen codes or passwords to connect our iPads to the ATV3 and 8.4.1 devices all connect great...it's anything with 9.x that have issues and always ask for the screen code which is turned off.

I'm beginning to wonder if this has any bearing with El Capitan. Something to do with AirPlay security vulnerabilities?

Come on Apple...we've got 150+ iPads and MacBooks left in the lurch here...including my own personal devices.

Here is a summary of my findings:

    1. iOS & OS X devices will “see” the ATV3 over the network, however the newly updated devices are now much slower at discovering any of our ATV3’s. Any attempt to connect to it will result in the iOS device “appearing to connect with the blue line at the top” but will NOT mirror.
    2. OS X “El Capitan” will have a window that states “Could not connect to ‘ATV3 Name’”
    3. At times, the ATV3s with no restrictions on connecting to them (no passcode to connect, no security and broadcasting on) seems to always ask for the “On Screen” passcode for devices with iOS 9.x and asking for absolutely nothing when connecting via iOS 8.4.1
    4. iOS devices with 8.4.1 connect seamlessly and quickly over the network to ATV 3…but iOS 9.x is a real random occurrence.
    5. If iOS 9.x connects it takes at least 90 seconds for it to do so. iOS 8.4.1 is instant.

Will definitely check out AirParrot 2 for Mac OS X. Seems like a real upgrade over AirPlay.

    Worked this out yesterday:

    1. Used "Configurator" to reinstall a fresh version the ATV3 software and found the following works. This could be a headache for a lot of schools. We have 20+ Apple TV devices at ours and mounted all over rooms. But!...

    2. iOS 9.x = devices will now connect and function normally with AirPlay after the Apple TV onscreen password is entered. Takes around 5 to 10 seconds to connect initially. Entered the onscreen passcode from the AppleTV onto the iOS device. After that it's as smooth as butter. Finally...

    3. iOS 8.4.1 = no on screen password required and mirroring via AirPlay is wonderfully fast.

    4. OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 = nothing.

    5. OS X 10.10 and previous versions totally work great.

Might not be that simple since my MBPR 15 is having trouble with an ATV2 at home but is working OK with an ATV3 at work...

Streaming Music via Airplay of an Airport Express is not working either when setting Sound Options in System Preferences to Airplay-devices. (It works with iTunes, but that´s not the only option to stream and listen to music - although apple might'd prefer and push it though).

    Worked perfectly with Yosemite though.

But without Airplay my whole sound-concept doesn't make sense any more and i'd have to hardwire my house all over - not an option though: so better solve the problem Apple-Support - FAST!
