Q: is not registered with imessage

So, my girlfriend is trying to send me imessages from her Macbook Air.

She's always been able to, up until today, she's been away from her MBA for 3 days.

She receives imessages to her phone from both my MBA and iPhone.

When she attempts to send a message from her laptop she receives the 'XXX XXX XXX is not registered with iMessage' announcement.

Any ideas?

MacBook Air, iOS 6.0.1

    HI,

On the MacBook Air she should go to the Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts  and check the account is active.

If it is then it may pay to "Disable" it then re-enable it again.

    Can we revive this discussion?

I just upgraded to El Capitan and this "Text from a computer" thing is new to me. I've looked everywhere for a solution and I see that in order to get Messages to work from my MacBook Pro I must turn it on on my iPhone. But when I do it asks for "the code shown on your Mac".

Where do I find that code?

    Hi,

Getting SMS to work to and from the Mac is the last in a series of settings  that have to be worked up to.

They also relate to the Progress of the Mac version and the iOS version along the way.

Technically the iOS app and the Mac app are compatible but not actually the same app.

When the iPhone is set to On in Messages it will then iMessages - to Apple IDs and iPhone numbers that are registered with iMessages (the server).

At this point it uses the iPhone Number only.

If the person is not registered with iMessages (all the non Apple phones) then it automatically swaps to SMS (Text) Messages.

Next the Mac app is Enabled and an Apple ID is added as the iMessages account ID.

At this point the Mac version can iMessages to Apple IDs and iPhone numbers that are registered.

It CANNOT do SMS Messages from the iMessages account at this point.

Then you add the Apple ID to the iPhone Settings.

This Links the iPhone Number and Apple ID and then the iMessages will "Sync" between the two from that point onwards.

iMessages sent to the iPhone Number will appear on the Mac and vice versa.

If you have iOS 8 at least and Yosemite, at least then you can enable the Text (SMS) Forwarding on the iPhone.

For it to work the iPhone needs to have joined your LAN (it can be WiFi). The Mac can be Ethernet or Wifi.

This should create a Code number to appear on the Mac.  (it is best that the App is started up already on the Mac but it will launch it if it is not).

The Code Number then needs to be entered back on the iPhone.

    So...

The Mac version and iPhone needs to be using the same Apple ID (already linked for the iMessages sync normally)

The iPhone needs to be on the same LAN - normally joins it via Wifi.

The the setting needs to be invoked, which causes the Code Number to appear on the Mac, to be entered back on the iPhone.

At this point the iPhone will get SMS messages via the Carrier service you have and send that to the Mac via the LAN.

The Mac can then answer using SMS via the reverse trip.

The Mac end will learn which are SMS contacts and after a while will suggest other numbers are "Text" rather than potential iMessages numbers.

    NOTES.

SYNC is only "Display on other devices".

As the Mac can Store (Save on Close) all the messages types it can get, you get the option to delete iMessages on one device only and it will be left on others.  Some people think it should be deleted across the board but that is not how it works.

The Names against each chat will appear the same if your sync the Contacts App on both devices.

Basically this moves the list to the Cloud and both devices can then access it.

This is much more of a proper sync as changes made to either show up on the other device.

iMessages are Pushed from the server.

Once your Mac has accepted it then it is deleted.

The same is true of the iPhone.

It can be regarded that the iMessages server "Copies" the iMessage and send a copy to each device individually.

    Thanks Ralph;

Your explanation of how this thing works is great.

The only step that I had a problem with was, "Where do I find that code?" That code appears in a window when the Messages app is open. The problem I had was two fold. First the window with the code did NOT show up until about an hour after I sent the request from my iPhone. So I just kept sending more requests. When they all showed up I tried the first couple and they didn't work so I gave up.

The second problem I have is that in my iPhone where you do the "Forwarding" thing my Mac is listed twice. Any idea why that is?

    Hi,

    The second bit first.

It appears if you have Two Mac User accounts that  both have the same Apple ID that is used in Messages that you can get this.

It seems to also happen if you manage, as you have, to attempt and get the Mac version to show many Code Numbers.

It is not clear which is the best way to clear the list on the iPhone when this happens.

One would think that turning Off Forwarding would do it but does not always work.

Removing the Apple ID (Signing out) and then qutting the Messages app and then resetting it from scratch seems to be the only way.

    Thank you;

I picked the first one in the list and turned it on. This time the code # came right up on my MacBook Pro. I entered the # and it appears all is well.

I don't think I will try to delete the second entry of my MacBook Pro. All my other devices are working in this regard just fine.

Thanks again for your info and patience.
