Q: can't sign in to App Store, iTunes Store, Messages, or FaceTime…

…but only on my iMac (pinwheel with no error, until force-quit). No trouble using any service on iPhone or other Mac. Issue isn't Apple ID-specific: tried my wife's ID and get the same result. Have tested in Guest user and in Safe Mode. Same results. The only thing that happens in Console when I attempt any of these logins is (obviously, the App Store reference is specific to the attempted login in App Store):

2015-10-10 3:06:09.604 PM App Store[2261]: Could not find image named 'NSImage'.

2015-10-10 2:53:16.850 PM accountsd[288]: AIDA Notification plugin running

Strangely, if I use an incorrect password with my ID, I get an immediate "Your Apple ID or password is incorrect", and then Console says:

2015-10-10 3:00:47.671 PM App Store[1922]: Unknown class FRToolbar in Interface Builder file at path /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/StoreUI.framework/Resources/Base.lproj/FRStor eViewController.nib.

This sort of thing is way beyond me.

Any advice?

I solved this myself, after wasting a lot of time with Apple Support.

Remove the file  /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.accountsd.plist  and reboot. As is most often the case with Apple problems, the preferences file has gotten corrupted, and the system can't figure out how to recover.

The only tricky thing is that that file is covered by El Capitan's System Integrity Protection (SIP). So to remove, you need to temporarily disable SIP. It is easy to Google how, but in a nutshell:  (1) reboot to recovery mode by holding Apple-R during reboot, (2) start a Terminal, (3) do "csrutil disable", (4) reboot.  After rebooting and rerunning Software update, do the same thing again but with "csrutil enable". That's it. So far it is working fine for me.

I hope it works for me! Right now I'm stymied because attempting to delete the .plist gives "…can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS X."

Sorry! I just woke up and got moving. Of course I can't delete it without disabling SIP first.

have exactly the same problem after the latest ElCapitan update.  Spent hours with senior Apple technicians and the problem remains....Apple should be aware that this is not just a unique problem with one machine and should be coming up with a solution soon.

See my reply above:  you have to delete the file /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.accountsd.plist, after temporarily disabling SIP.

I also got extremely frustrated with "senior Apple technicians" who did not even know, for example, what the /etc/hosts file does (I had some custom entries in there and they claimed that might be messing up my system). They are programmed to try to identify every problem as something the customer is doing wrong, whereas this is clearly a bug in El Capitan. That file cannot even be modified by anything except system processes. And in my experience, Apple processes very commonly corrupt their configuration and preferences files, so removing any relevant .plist file is what works. I will not use Apple Support again.

Didn't work for me: no change. (Disabling SIP did fix a couple of other issues I was having, oddly, with firewall rules not sticking and such.)

Did you reboot in between removing the .plist file and trying to connect? I have found that to be necessary sometimes. The system must cache the information somehow.

I did, but I'll give it another go. It's definitely caching: before I deleted it the first time, it was dated 2013; now it's not today (as I'd figure it should be), it's October 13. Quite odd.

I have disabled SIP but how do I delete the file?  Maybe a very simple question but where is it

The file is located at /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.accountsd.plist I don't know if that is visible in the Finder -- I did it from a terminal. Be careful with system files, and it is probably a good idea to reenable SIP after doing stuff like this.

But this actually seems not to have fixed my problems. I can now connect to the App Store, but Mail fails with a message "Failed to communicate with accountsd". Also the System Preferences pane says "Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane." I have tried my usual strategies of removing all cache and .plist files, and nothing makes a difference. I think I am going to have to reinstall the whole system which *****. Apple has really messed up with this El Capitan accounts management.

Yeah, the file is visible in the Finder.

I had to run a reinstall from Recovery after deleting it in order to fix the Mail issue you're having.

Well, I guess I spoke too soon about it being solved. After removing the file, Apple ID worked but Mail did not work.

Eventually I noticed that the file was not recreated by the Apple ID login, which is probably why Mail did not work. I reinstalled from Recovery as you suggest (I had to do the multi-GB download twice because the first one hung when almost finished). It has recreated the file, and now Mail works, but Apple ID logins have gone back to hanging.

I really hate the idea of doing a clean install and rebuilding the whole system, but at this point I am kind of out of ideas. I would say this is a pretty serious bug on the Apple side.

Hi Been back to Apple Support and that is what I've been told to do. What a bind. Hope we finally have a solution.

I wiped the drive, reinstalled 10.11 and migrated my user from a clone. Same ****, different day.

    Hi Guys,

Not sure whether any of you have got a permanent fix for this yet but I managed to identify the reason for my issue via another thread.  My serial # has always shown as unavailable because of a drive replacement when it was new.  I took my mac into genius bar today, they re-established the serial # on my device and it works fine now.  The phone and chat guys don't seem to know about this issue.  This might help.

OS X El Capitan Install Erased Mac-Mini Serial Number; Is there a tool to restore it?

Hope you all have the same success as me finding the answer to this frustrating problem.

    Cheers

    Nic
