Nov 7, 2015 8:44 AM in response to Tumbleweed_Jonesby FoxFifth,If you do a backup via iTunes, Camera Roll photos are included in the backup, but the content of the backup is not easily viewable on the computer. The backup is meant only for use in doing a full restore of the iPhone or iPad. A backup to iCloud also does not transfer photos to a computer.
You can transfer photos via USB cable using the following instructions Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer - Apple Support
Your signature shows OS X 10.4.11 which is from 2007. I don't know what other methods are possible with that.
With Yosemite (OS X 10.10.3) or later, iCloud Photo Library is another option and many other options are also available.

Further development has been stopped on both iPhoto and Aperture. Also, if you are transferring your photos from the iPhone to the Mac via iCloud Photo Library, that only works with the new Photos app.
