Q: El Capitan - printer fails with 'filter failed'

Hey you Apple-Maniacs out there,

finally i got a reason to ask our mighty community for support/help but the reason is very unpleasant for me...

Since the last OS update from Yosemite to El Capitan my printer is not working, it's been still recognized but it fails everytime with the same error.

I am talking about an Epson AcuLaser M1400 connected via USB to my Air and sadly the printer is working with a Windows Laptop, so the issue has to be on the Mac .

performed TS:

> I already downloaded the newest drivers from Apple and Epson: no sucess

> tried to delete and add the printer several times and even restarted my mac

> changed toner

> doesn't matter what kind of data type/document/apps are used

So any advices or even solutions?

Thanks a lot!

    Hi all,

Same problem here, with an Epson CX 17 WF

Contacted today Epson Support via chat and all they did was send me a link to an old driver version that doesn't even install in El Capitan OS.

Hope someone addresses this problem fast because instead of a printer now I have a grey cube on my desk.

    Same here with EPSON MX14....

I have contacted epson these days and just got response from them 30min ago.

What they told me is there will be a new driver to be released by Jan/2016...(yeah...2016...)

And they suggested me to do right now is :

    (1) Call apple to see if there is a way to change back to 10.10

    (2) Find another computer to do the printing job

    (3) Wait until January next year...

It's quite annoy to have this problem...the printer now is sitting on the desk as a plastic box not a functional device.

I am having the same issue.  The Epson website says that the updated drives are included with the El Capitan update.  This is not the case.

One work around...  when adding the printer, i had to use the IP tab with the IPP protocol selected.  I typed in my printer ip address, BUT this IS NOT my preferred way of using my printer.  I want the correct EPSON drivers!

Same issue with no printers in System Preferences after update to El Capitan. I did get a dialog box asking me to update the drivers, which seemed to happen in the background. I tried all the different "fixes" with no positive result. One smart Apple community member said to re-set the modem(I have cable) and...

Voila. I now have WiFi printing again with my Epson Workforce 645.

I'm glad some of you are finding work-arounds! I've tried what you've suggested, but no luck. So I have an $80 Brother laser printer on my desk now. I will still seek a solution so I can use the Epson for color printing. But January? I can't wait that long.

    Thankx for the feedback.

I tried the IP thing you mention, robin, but it doesn't work for me.

It recognizes the printer but when I try to print I still get the same "filter failed" error.

Same problem on an Epson 7890. Called Epson. They could not help. We did figure out it is a problem with Adobe products for my "filter failed" problem.

    Don't know what to do.

Disabling SIP allowed me to get my MFC printer/scanner working again but the device software still hard crashes.  At least I am able to complete a scan after disabling System Integrity Protection.

Basically SIP is breaking device and USB drivers.

Totally rubbish Epson, today 3/11 already, still have not get any work driver. Just a simple printer driver, I can not imagine and understand, just a simple printer driver for a such a long time has not solved the problem, even the EI Capitan beta already launched a very long long time, printer has been inoperable for a month, the situation same as I did not purchase printer, my file until today, still can not print, I will never buy Epson products, I really have no way to describe how angry and disappointed I am.

Yep, my Epson Perfection V30 scanner stopped working when I upped to El Capitan. But only on my 2009 iMac 27.  On my 2015 MacBookPro it works just fine -- even without the driver uploads from Epson. Go figure.

Same problem here in  Germany with my Epson AcuLaser CX17NF-WF. I was promised by Epson support that the driver should be available for download by the end of October. I have checked today and nothing is there

Found a solution that worked for me when running 10.11 with Epson Aculaser CX17WF (guess it will work for CX17 as well).

NOTE: this does not fix any issues for the scanner of the Epson Aculaser, do not attempt these steps if you do not feel comfortable working with the terminal.

The issue is originating from the fact that OSX 10.11 comes with a protected mode called System Integrity Protection (rootless), which protect the Epson Printer driver installer from placing files under /usr/lib where is expects to place them. Under 10.11 this folder is read-only, where the older Epson driver installer expect to write in them.

To fix this, I performed the following steps:

    1. Go to printer & scanners and reset your printer system, see OS X Yosemite: Reset the printing system . Warning: this will remove all installed printer configuration and drivers.

    2. Download the printer drivers from Epson at location http://download.epson-europe.com/pub/download/5125/epson512528eu.dmg (EU version). Possible other driver version will work as well.

    3. Reboot your computer and start in recovery mode to disable the System Integrity Protection for this installation only. To do this, reboot and hold command+R key and type "csrutil disable; reboot" within a terminal, see http://osxdaily.com/2015/10/05/disable-rootless-system-integrity-protection-mac- os-x/

    4. Once booted again from recovery mode, perform your installation of the Epson driver, this should now complete without errors. The following messages will now show via the console log viewer application:

    07/11/15 21:08:57,576 sandboxd[373]: ([796]) shove(796) System Policy: allow file-write-create /usr/lib/sehk1acl.dylib

    07/11/15 21:08:57,593 sandboxd[373]: ([796]) shove(796) System Policy: allow file-write-flags /usr/lib/sehk1acl.dylib

    07/11/15 21:08:57,612 sandboxd[373]: ([796]) shove(796) System Policy: allow file-write-create /usr/lib/sehk1ajbf.dylib

    07/11/15 21:08:57,630 sandboxd[373]: ([796]) shove(796) System Policy: allow file-write-flags /usr/lib/sehk1ajbf.dylib

    07/11/15 21:08:57,647 sandboxd[373]: ([796]) shove(796) System Policy: allow file-write-create /usr/lib/sehk1alut.dat

    07/11/15 21:08:57,650 sandboxd[373]: ([796]) shove(796) System Policy: allow file-write-flags /usr/lib/sehk1alut.dat

    5. Important: reboot your computer again and enable again the System Integrity Protection in recovery mode, by typing "csrutil enable; reboot".

    6. Discover your Epson printer once your computer has started again and add your driver to it, in my case I had to manually select and add the aculaser printer. Verify if your printer is working by printing a testpage

    7. Verify if the System Integrity Protection is enabled again by typing "csrutil status" in a terminal window. It should say "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", else this back again in recovery mode.

I reinstalled my EPSON Photo Stylus 7890 using the CUPS interface and it worked!!!! If you are comfortable with the interface, use it!!!
