Q: Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

      Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

         com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(1.4)[70E2B65E-A91A-3522-A1A0-79FD63EABB4C]@0xfffff f7f82ecb000->0xffffff7f82ed3fff

         com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform(3.1)[97299A71-6EDD-3AD9-AE1D-2F7B61E8AA72]@0 xffffff7f8458b000->0xffffff7f845e9fff

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

    Some months ago in this discussion we find out here, that animated menu bar items, especially colored animated menu bar items in connection with an intel HD 4000 graphic card are related to the flickering effect.

    If you disable all animated color menu bar items you solve the bigger part of the flickering effect. Sometimes there could be a little flickering effect but very, very much rarer. I read, that the guys from Bartender found a workarround for this problem, if you move the color animated menu bar item in the bartender bar, but because Im not use Bartender, I cant check this.

    MenuMeter ist not the only affected menu bar item, same problem - for example - with network monitor from Little Snitch, iStat Menus ans so on, its a system bug/graphical driver bug or any in this direction, not an bug of the menu bar apps.

    So disable MenuMeters and the flickering is largely no longer an greater issue.date

    Update: Here the link i found this information with bartender: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/152038/prevent-redraw-of-menu-bar-icons -yosemite

    since 10.10.3 I suffered with fluckering and random restarts (look for my other posts in this thread). I want to report that after updating (no clean install) my Mini late 2012 to El Capitan 10.11 the flickering and restarts have decreased in frequency, and since 10.11.1 they completely stopped.

    I noticed that, while the restarts seemed to happen really at random, the flickering wasn't related just to animated/colored menu icons, but to *every* ongoing pixel activity on the display output, after something triggered the flickering onset. For example, when the flickering blocks appear, if I tried to drag or resize a window in another unrelated screen zone the flicker would increase in "repainting" frequency, according to my mouse drag actions, like it is in some way connected to *any* graphic repaint activity. I.e. Dragging the window corner to resize the window would increase the flashing activity, stopping the resize would reduce the flashing frequency to "normal".

    Tip: besides menu bar icons I would suggest to try to disable any animated widget in the dashboard. Mine was in set to "overlay" mode and I was using an old iStat widget and disabling that may have helped too. Try and report if anything improved for you too after "polishing" or disabling dashboards.

    Not a single restart since I updated to 10.11.1

    I think I read somewhere that Apple updated video drivers (Intel & NVidia) in this point release. That may have fixed the issues.

    I'm curious what the new drivers in 10.11.1 actually fix.

    These are my new video "artifacts" placed in Contacts.

    I think we should shift now to a new thread focusing to graphics/flickering problems with El Capitan.

    Tried 10.11.1 : El Capitan OK (no kernel panics), BUT : extra delay (about 20 sec.) for stop or restart the server (not session or os-x that stop quickly), and two times  black screen at switch on (had to unplug/replug). I suspect problem with EFI/SMC. For those who have mac mini late 2012 and El capitan OK : can you give me your EFI/SMC ? Mine is MM61.0106.B0A - 2.8f0 . I know for SMC some people have 2.8f1 that should be the last but I did not find how to download it.

    Quick update for me. I previously reported that all my flickering and restarting issues went away with the El Capitan upgrade, but yesterday I noticed a flickering bar on my secondary monitor. I have a Mac Mini Late 2012 with two monitors attached. Crossing my fingers that the restarts aren't next, but so far the machine is running great.

    Gonna chip in here. 2012 non-retina MBP. Upgraded 10.11 and 10.11.1. No more kernel panics but I've had artifacts appear on my menubar after a week, as well as the bottom right corner of my screen. Logging out and back in was the only way to remove it. Screensaver, switching desktops, none of that seems to have fixed it. Happens on reduced transparency with dark menubar. glitch.png
