Q: EtreCheck help - should i have any concerns before switching to El Capitan?

I am considering upgrading from Yosemite 10.7.5 to El Capitan.  I've seen other posts about system slowness under El Capitan, so i want to make sure my Mac is as healthy as possible before migrating.

Below is my EtreCheck report.  Much of this is greek to me.  I would appreciate any input anyone can provide on if there are any big issues in here that i need to take care of to help improve system performance both now and post migration to El Capitan.

Thank you very much.

You're  currently running Lion not Yosemite. Before you upgrade to El Capitian you would be wise to upgrade your ram.

I know i said much of that is greek to me, but i should learn to read better…..it tells me right there i'm on Lion (not Yosemite), i should have been able to figure that much out at least!

Thanks for setting me straight on that and for the advice on the RAM.

Aside from really needing more RAM (4 GB is the absolute minimum and you are swapping quite a bit), why do you have all the WD drivers installed? There is absolutely no need to have any software installed for external hard drives; it is better to format them using Disk Utility - that is what I do with a new external drive: erase and format for Mac.

And, I would uninstall uTorrent to keep your Mac trouble free; I'm not sure if it would interfere with the new SIP feature in El Capitan, but it may (besides, downloading from anywhere but the app store or the developer website directly can result in all sorts of adware and malware on your Mac).

Finally, make sure you have a full backup or clone before upgrading, so you can revert back if there is a problem.

I concur with the others. RAM is the primary concern. With an SSD, 4GB of RAM is sufficient for light use. With a mechanical hard drive, the more RAM you can squeeze in, the better.

And make sure you back up your system before you attempt to upgrade. Things will probably go fine, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks….the WD drivers are there probably b/c i simply didn't know any better when i moved all my old (and quite large) iMovie files to an external drive.

I take it that if i erase those drivers and re-format the external drive, i'd be deleting all of the files on that drive and would need to copy them back over after the re-formatting?

    Thanks KiltedTim.

Is there a limit on the RAM for a Late 2009 iMac?  For example, do i gain much by going to 12gb or 16gb?  Or is going to 8gb generally sufficient?

We are fairly basic users….email, internet, spreadsheets/Office, iPhoto, iMovie viewing.

If you reformat, yes, the drive will be erased. I don't trust the WD software as they had a problem a couple of years ago where people lost the data on the drives because of the software. But, the point is: there is no software needed on a hard drive; you can either drag/copy files over, or use Time Machine to back up everything, or clone with either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper your entire system to an external. If you want to get rid of those drivers, you may have to ask WD support - I would not feel comfortable offering suggestions as I've never done that.

As for the RAM - 16 GB is the max supported by Apple:

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-3.06-21-inch-al uminum-late-2009-specs.html

Best places to check are OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial. But remember, the iMac is 6 years old at this point, so It would not invest a huge amount of money in it at that age.

I noticed you have some MS office apps running.  Since there is no mention of the version,

you should check for compatibility before upgrading.  It seems from posts here that

Office 2011 or later seem to be okay at this point, although not necessarily trouble free

(but then again what Microsloth product is trouble free).
