Oct 26, 2015 2:21 PM in response to ocalalabsby rkaufmann87,Sounds like a failed GPU, try Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support. Run it in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. If you get errors at any point you know it needs to go in for repair.

Oct 26, 2015 2:35 PM in response to ocalalabsby rkaufmann87,If you tried to run AHT and you still cannot due to your issue then your only resort is to take it to an Apple Store for diagnostics or to take it to an AASP in your area. If you don't know of any AASPs then please click the following link to begin finding some. https://locate.apple.com/country
Good luck.

Oct 26, 2015 4:44 PM in response to rkaufmann87by ocalalabs,OK so now I am really confused. After an hour of what it was doing, it booted up and has now been working perfectly for several hours. So how do I run AHT?
Thanks

Nov 8, 2015 4:53 AM in response to ocalalabsby ocalalabs,OK, pardon my ignorance, I did not realize the AHT acronym was Apple Hardware Test. Well I ran it and it says the hardware is fine. I noticed that during the test the left side case fan ran high for a few seconds, I am assuming that was part of the test, but the right side fan did not. What it is doing now is it starts, but there is no chime. Then the grey screen comes up with the Apple logo and the progress bar. When the progress bar reaches about the half way point, the screen goes completely grey. Then it goes black for a second, this is the point where it would normally start up, however, now at this point, I hear an audible click and it shuts off and restarts and goes through the whole cycle endlessly.

Nov 8, 2015 7:16 AM in response to ocalalabsby Bovver,Hello ocalalabs,
I had the same issue myself about two weeks ago and after contacting Apple care and trying to resolve any software problems without success it was suggested I took the iMac into an Apple store, which I did and they discovered it was a faulty graphics card. I was informed that as it was a AMD Radeon 6790M one it would be replaced free of charge if my computer was less than 4 years old; which it was by a few days - so they replaced it and problem solved.
I was also assured that if it was under 6 years old then they would have contacted Apple to see what they would agree to.
Looking on Apple support's website, I have since discovered an article about this issue which is worth a read.
Hope it helps,
Bovver

Run AHT in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. The basic test is worthless and AHT is not always accurate either, however sometimes it does find errors.

Nov 10, 2015 7:27 AM in response to rkaufmann87by ocalalabs,I have run the extended test 4 times, back to back with the same results of no issues. May be the graphics card, because it is atthe point that the computer goes from grey screen to what should be the full color screen that the start up stops and it shuts down.
Thanks

Nov 10, 2015 7:29 AM in response to Bovverby ocalalabs,Think you are correct. It is at the point when start up goes from grey screen to full graphics, that it shuts down. Will have to take it in. Hate to do that, the nearest Apple authorized service is over 70 miles away.

Unfortunately AHT is not the most reliable test however it's all you have to test. I think you should take the machine into an Apple Store or an AASP in your area to have it professionally diagnosed. Hopefully they will find the issue and then you can decide what you want to do. If you are not aware of any AASPs in your area, please click the following link to begin finding one.

Nov 10, 2015 10:34 AM in response to ocalalabsby Bovver,Hello again ocalabs,
Hadn't realised I could have attach the link from Apple Support which you can click on to get an explanation of the replacement programme if your Graphics card is the same as the culprit described.
Hope it helps and your trip is worthwhile.

Nov 11, 2015 6:53 AM in response to Bovverby ocalalabs,Thanks,
I contacted Apple and even though it was 4 years in August, they set up an appointment for me for next week, to replace the card free of charge.
Thanks again.
