This worked for me .. Thanks !

    • Complete an unencrypted itunes backup
    • turn off find my iphone
    • under backups select "restore backup" ... not the "restore iphone" setting
    • restore from your latest unencrypted backup
    • turn off and on the setting to use the iphone as a health info source

Worked for me also. Thank you!

It is surprising that the senior advisers I spoke to at Apple Support didn't point me in this direction. Been having this problem for over a month.

How can I create an "unencrypted itunes backup"?

When I try to create one, iTunes says, that I need to enter a password to encrypt my backup...

When I click "cancel", the backup it canceled

It seems you already have created an encrypted backup.  You must have encrypted it for a reason.  So of course it is basically impossible to then say "Oh well, I won't use the password because I don't know it, but forget it - I now want to create an unencrypted backup."

    As this article says:

"If you forgot your password, the only way to turn off backup encryption on your device is to erase your device and set it up as new."

This worked for me as well.  A much better option than doing a full reset of the iPhone.  I hope this issue is resolved in the next iOS update.

I had the same issue after I exchanged my iPhone 6S with Apple for unrelated issue.  Original iPhone 6S worked fine.  After restoring from iCloud backup for my new 6S, the issue occurred.  My iPhone didn’t show as a source device, nor did my Apple Watch.  I do recalled that, during the restoration, there was a message saying the latest backup was corrupted.  Then this issue happened.  Spent 2 hours at Genius Bar, same issue persisted.  After upgrading to iOS 9.2, the issue didn’t go away.  By following the unencrypted backup method through iTune, now I have both 6S and Apple Watch as a source device in Health.

    Thank you so much!

My health app hasn’t worked since iPhone 6.. I have a 6s now. The thought of having to setup my phone as “new” is was sickening!  YOUR FIX WORKED LIKE A CHARM!  THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem and this worked. Note that I did try to restore backup without resetting content and settings, I reset and restored with iCloud - both of these didn't dork for me. I also did an encrypted backup first and then needed to go to preferences, delete my encrypted backups, also I needed to delete the circleback profile I had set up on the iPhone to allow me to remove the encrypt option in iTunes. What worked for me was an unencrypted backup, a reset of all content and settings, then restore the backup. Thanks to all that took the time to save us from this Apple health debacle.

I have same issue and now am on my 3rd 6S - (primarily I replace my 6 b/c the screen went black - I believe this iPhone 6 is not deleted somewhere in iLand... hence is still my "health data source" and it is not the motion chip....however my saga....

    • 6S #1 had an issue with my microphone (and the Health Data was secondary) replaced at TMobile under warrantee after 1 month
    • 6S #2 After self trouble shooting then Apple Support on the phone - I was escalated to the Boston Genius Bar - 12/14
      • Great guys & terrific customer experience BUT I stumped the Boston Genius Bar!  Over an hour was spent erasing and rebooting my newly replaced phone 2 week old - 4 Geniuses in on the gig - then I was issued under warranty iPhone 6S #3
    • 6S #3  Thankfully I checked before leaving the store....b/c my Health Data *still* didn't work....  Then an escalation ticket was filed -  to Apple Engineering - the Head Genius told me either an Engineer or Genius Bar would be calling me.... that was on 12/14 (3 weeks ago)...
    • I have ensured no devices are in my "Find my iPhone" locator or in my iCloud account... prior to finding this thread... Fitness tracking on
    • rebooted after removing from my iCloud Account 6S #2
    • Because I have an UP2 band that tracks my steps (which I have uninstalled the app as a trouble shooting method) I fortunately have not had to rely on the Health Data and the holidays have not offered me time to call into Apple Support
    • I can't believe it is a hardware issue - it has to be a bug somewhere or an "Open" iPhone associated with my telephone number/ip address - it has been frustrating however.....and to quote one of the Geniuses "It's like buying a new car and the radio doesn't work"  EXACTLY!

I'm glad to have found this thread because a month ago there was no chatter anywhere about othe issue.

I will let you folks know what happens with the saga..........keep your fingers crossed.....  I can honestly say the help I have received at Apple has been very nice - it just hasn't solved this issue....and after this length of time with this amount of frustration.... well.....it's tough to be patient...but I do say I am an Apple convert from the release of the iPhone 6 ...

.......we shall see....what emerges from the Freedom Trail here in Boston....

Restoring from an unencrypted itunes backup worked for me as well!  I cannot tell you how happy I am that I didn't have to restore my phone and set it back up as a new phone.  I accidentally stumbled on this post and it was my last resort before admitting defeat and just deleting my entire phone and starting over.  I seriously almost cried when I saw it working again!  Now if I could just get my Apple Watch back from "repair" so I can start using that again, since Apple support initially told me my watch was the issue and to send that in.....Kind of bitter I sent my perfectly good watch in when that wasn't even the issue in the first place.  Oh well, it's all fixed now so I'm happy

Hey I had this problem for months! The Health app and the activity app stopped working when I switched from a 6s to 6s Plus and it no longer synced with my Apple watch (which was tracking health data). I tried everything, including restoring from an unencrypted backup. The only thing that worked for me was to sent up the phone as a new phone, which isn't as crazy as it seems, because all of your contacts are stored in the cloud. The main thing that's lost is the data in your apps. But it does solve the problem. I think the problem is some conflict between the Health app and another prevalent app which everyone may already have.

i had an iPhone 6 and my health app worked perfectly fine, switced to iPhone 6s and the health app did not work. my recent fix is documented below

turn off "icloud" and "find my iPhone"

plug phone to itunes and back up (if you purchased apps, make sure you click on transfer purchased apps)

once back up up is complete you are going to restore iPhone to factory settings

once reset is complete go through with the set up(Set up as a new phone)

dont worry about setting up Siri and other items. its not important to do so yet

at this point you should be able to click on the health app. Go to the setting where you can add your age and gender, input that information

leave that hat screen and then go back in. You should see the information previously documented.

at this point you can plug your iPhone to your computer and open itunes

restore back up and you should have all of your old information and your health app should work.

this process should take about an hour or so to complete

This fix the lost device issue at health app for me:

    • Complete an unencrypted itunes backup
    • turn off find my iphone
    • under backups select "restore backup" ... not the "restore iphone" setting
    • restore from your latest unencrypted backup
    • turn off and again on the setting to use the iphone as a health info source

    regards
