Q: MacMini Mid-2010 4,1 USB Problems with Keyboard and Mouse (IOUSBHostHIDDevice & AppleUSBHostPort errors)

0 down vote  favorite

I am having following issues on the MacMini quoted in the Title. Basically every so often, the keyboard and/or mouse freeze. I then have to unplug them and plug them back in and they work fine again for a certain time. Very annoying whilst trying to get some work done for many hours per day. Below is the errors and notifications in the Console happening as this occurs. I am using a Microsoft keyboard and Logitech mouse btw.

I have already done a PRAM Reset but it hasn't helped. I have tried swapping around the USB ports and that hasn't helped either.

Also whilst having an external HDD attached, I had several kernel panics (output below), specifically every time I was doing a Paypal payment with Chromium. The kernel log also lists USB related stuff near the top, so that's another indicator. I deinstalled the Logitech drivers as they appeared too but that hasn't helped. Disconnecting the USB HDD has stopped the Kernel Panics.

However when I attach for example my Smartphone via USB, there's no errors/freezes/panics at all.

I didn'T have this problem when I was using Snow Leopard but ever since upgrading to Mavericks and then El Capitan.

Now, I have checked my Boot-ROM and it's really out of date: MM41.0042.B00

I have found two Firmware updates, namely 1.5 and 1.8, the latter of which is specifically for MacMinis with USB Problems, however they won't install. 1.5 basically tells me that it's not compatible with El Capitan, and 1.8 tells me that it's not required. Well how can I upgrade my Boot-ROM to the latest firmware B03 Version? Surely this would be a good idea?

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1828?locale=en_US

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1479?locale=en_US

Or am i mislead thinking updating the Firmware might solve these issues?

So, has anyone got any further ideas as to what I could do to fix/troubleshoot these issues, or does somebody know if those logs mean the logic board is on its way out?

I suppose a solution would be to either use a Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard or to attach a USB3 Hub via Thunderbolt and plug my USB devices into that, correct? That would bypass the faulty USB Logic Board. That way I could get more mileage out of this MacMini!

Many thanks for your help in advance, much appreciated!!!

    Try removing the Logitech driver/software.

You need the EFI Firmware Update 1.5 for your 2010 Mac Mini, the 1.8 is for the Late 2012 Mac Mini's.

see > About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers - Apple Support

or go to > Mac mini (Mid 2010) EFI Firmware Update 1.5

I'm not sure exactly how to help you if the Firmware Update does not take, because my 2010 Mini's Firmware updated to B03 years ago. Perhaps you should try installing the Firmware up-date while started-up in Safe Mode.

see > Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

As for the External Hard Drive, you didn't say what make/model it is, how it is formatted or what you are using it for....?

    Hey Illaas,

thanks for your help. I already spotted that and removed the Logitech drivers but it didn't help, unfortunately.

    Hey Den,

it says Late-2012 but on various articles on the net it states that 1.8 may also help with other MacMini models with USB issues, so it's not restricted to post-2012 models only. I will try that with the Safe Mode to install 1.5 but actually, I CAN tell the installer to "Install anyway" on El Capitan, but at the end it says it's not compatible...I guess I will have to install Lion on a partition and install 1.5 that way?

Also my AHT/Diagnostics isn't available because of the upgrades to Mavericks and then El Capitan.  And because the firmware is out of date I havent got the online diagnostics either. I'm trying to restore the .diagnostics folder in the CoreServices but because of El Capitans new rootless setup Terminal tells me that the operation is not permitted...I will try and disable the new System Integrity protection in Safe Mode, so that I can restore it.

    FYI See:  http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2011080811033562

The external HDD is some 2.5 inch Spinner that I have on MAC OS Journaled (Extended) and using with Time Machine only.

Whats the meaning of those errors in the log anyway:

IOUSBHostHIDDevice::interruptRetry: resetting device due to IO failures

AppleUSBHostPort::resetGated: retrying enumeration in 100 ms

Hi Den, right, in the meantime I have gotten this far:

    1) I have managed to install the 1.5 Update so I am now also on ...B03. Strangely, when booting into Safe Mode, it executed the Firmware Update package without complaining BUT upon restart it didnt beep nor go into the grey firmware update screen. When I then re-run the package in normal mode, it DID restart and apply the firmware upgrade....go figure.

    2) I have managed to disable SIP via Recovery Mode Terminal and restore the .diagnostics folder in CoreServices. Obviously re-enabled SIP afterwards.

    3) Safe Mode Boot should have sorted out any Kernel and System Cache Issues

    4) I still cannot get into the AHT, despite updated BootRoom and .diagnostics folder...I really need to do a hardware scan now to try and isolate the USB issue. Any further ideas?

    5) I have also run the Disk Aid whilst in the Recovery Mody and no issues were found on the HDD

    6) Carried out SMC Reset

Just as I wanted to log onto my Apple Support Community Account the keyboard froze and I had to unplug it back in to sort it out...so the issue isn't fixed.

    Error still:

    09.11.15 11:45:35,000 kernel[0]: 000389.667049 IOUSBHostHIDDevice@26230000,0: IOUSBHostHIDDevice::interruptRetry: resetting device due to IO failures

    Any further ideas? Thanks!

Glad to hear that the Firmware updated.

As for the USB problem, I'm starting to think that you have a bad USB cable or USB device.

Hey Den. It would be strange that both the Mouse and Keyboard have gone faulty at the same time though. If only one device was doing it, but both? To eliminate this possibility, I will bring in another keyboard and mouse tomorrow and see if the problem stops, but I would bet money on it that it doesn't. They do seem to "freeze" separately...

A shorting cable or a bad device on the USB device tree, will cause problems for the other devices on the device tree.

For example: if the chip in your external USB hard drive case was going bad or if it had a bad cable, would it not cause a problem for other USB device tree like your keyboard and mouse. NO...? Well I say, YES it would....

I would connect and test each of the devices that you have one at a time.

Thanks Den. Well this morning i plugged in a different mouse & keyboard and would you believe it, the problems disappeared. So it was the most obvious thing, that fixed it. However running the other things surely didn't hurt the system either. What is really strange though, is that after using the other set all morning, I plugged in just the old mouse and it didn't freeze either. This led me to believe that it must be the old keyboard. So I plugged that back in a few hours ago, so I'm back on the old combo, and the problems STILL haven't resurfaced. I suppose I can relax now that it's not the logic board's USB controller and to do with the peripherals...
