Q: zip dive (G4 PowerBook with 10.5.8)

Good morning.

Should any USB Zip drive work well with the imbedded iOmega software?

Or..........

Thanks for your time.

It's been a while but my recollection is that, with OSX, the support for ZIP drives became native to the OS. With my PowerMac G4 tower running OS 10.4 and 10.5, my old external USB ZIP 100 drive showed up on the Desktop with my having to installed any drivers as we had to in the pre-OSX days.

Are you having problems getting yours recognized? If so, post some details and we'll see if there is a way to get things running.

    Howdy Bruce

Adding to our friend Allan's success reports - I have a PB Pismo Tiger to which I recently plugged up my ZIP Drive = fired right up... I do have all the Iomega software installed from way back when, however.

    best luck

Oops, the caffeine hadn;t kicked in when I typed my reply earlier. This:

...my old external USB ZIP 100 drive showed up on the Desktop with my having to installed any drivers...

    should read:

...my old external USB ZIP 100 drive showed up on the Desktop without my having to installed any drivers...

    [chuckle = well caffeinated]

I learned speed reading as a teen - both boon an bane. I retained only the "good parts" in 'scanning' your post:

... with OSX, the support for ZIP drives became native to the OS. With my PowerMac G4 tower running OS 10.4 and 10.5, my old external USB ZIP 100 drive showed up on the Desktop...

    stopped reading after that

    Thanks for your reply.

I plugged the Zip 100 USB in.

The system profiler recognized it, but I can't find it anywhere on the desktop.

I inserted a Zip disc with data on it, and nothing appeared.

iOmega tools said there was a valid drive.

    Any ideas?

Does it show up in Disk Utility?

If so, you may only need to change your Finder preferences. By default, the only thing that shows on the desktop is the hard drive icon. You can change that by checking all the boxes under "Show these items on the Desktop":

[screenie is from 10.4.11 but it should be quite similar in 10.5.8]
