Q: Imessages not working

Using iPhone 5s using iOS 9.0.2

my imessages isn't working. I can send regular texts just fine but I want to definitely make sure my imessage was used so i enabled airplane mode and ensured my wifi was connected. From past experience this works, the loading bar at the top (below the contacts name) will be blue (for imessages and not green for regular texts) and the mesage balloon will be blue and not green.

However, wth airplane mode on and wifi connected, the loading bar is still green and when it finishes loading I get a message window saying:

"Turn off airplane mode or use wifi to send and recieve messages"

I've followed everything from this website but it doesn't work (with one exception, i couldn't do one of the steps asking to turn off wifi assist because i don't have that option even if i use the search bar)

If it matters, at the time when i was finishing the ios installation, i think there was a message on itunes saying to update carrier settings but i accidentally canceled it

    Hi DMON1,

Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.

It looks like iMessage isn't working and you've tried some good troubleshooting steps so far.

If your iPhone is still on iOS 9.0.2, be sure to update to the latest version (currently iOS 9.1). You can also update the carrier settings on your device by going to Settings > General > About.

You can follow the steps below from If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

Restart your device and check for updates

    1. Restart your device.
    2. Check for a carrier settings update.
    3. Check for an iOS software update.

After the updates, try these steps again if the issue continues:

Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime, then sign back in:

    1. Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
    2. Go to Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
    3. On your iPhone first, sign back in to iMessage and FaceTime.
    4. Sign back in to iMessage and FaceTime on your other devices.

Let us know if this solves it or has an effect on the issue.

    All the best.
