There are several ways to do this, depending on what data you want to share and what operating system each Mac is running.  Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to verify the operating system, and then tell us is it data from iTunes, Safari Bookmarks, Photos, or some other application you want to share.

If you want to switch the machines so you have dad's old machine and he has yours, you have to use a time machine backup of one of the machines. Set the hard drive aside and use migration to copy the contents of one machine to the other. Now you have two identical machines. Mount the time machine drive on the appropriate machine and use migrate to copy from the back-up to the machine's hard drive. Personally, I'd have a time machine backup of both machines and I'd use a Thunderbolt cable for the transfer but be sure to turn off WiFi on both machines if you use a cable.
