Q: Safari not working after upgrade to El Capitan

After upgrading my iMac (late 2014) 4 GHz Intel Core i7 to El Capitan Safari has major problems.  Safari basically struggles to load websites and seems to be unresponsive.  Turning on developer tools and watching the network activity - nothing happens after hitting return to load a website..  Chrome browser works a bit better and I can see the websites load - also my MacBook which isn't running El Capitan shows websites loading in Safari and Chrome when they don't load on the iMac.  My Windows 10 machine and iPad and iPhone also all work fine.  So there's no doubting Safari/El Capitan on the iMac has a problem.

So Safari looks like it will load the website the website bar fills to about 25% and stops - there is no activity on the network, sometimes hitting 'return' here gets the website to load.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Me and my other half who just got a new MBP a few days ago with a fresh installation to boot, we both have this issue (exactly as you). Have tried everything to resolve.

Everything,,,to no avail.  I hope this gets fixed soon.

No joy on either option.  Sometimes after the page initial load fails I can click on the reload option and the page loads immediately.

I have had the exact same issue on a brand new Macbook Pro Retina since the El Capitan upgrade.  Non of the DNS configuration solutions fix this problem.  I actually went through all of this with Apple Support.

Safari may work fine for 5 minutes or so then pages start to hang at the 25% mark just as chapmann007 stated.  Opening a new tab will either display the same behavior or show "not connected to internet".  Mail, messages, Chrome....anything else using internet works flawlessly.  Safari seems to be the only thing with an issue.

This problem occurs on every network I have connected the computer to....home, work, starbucks, relatives network out of state, everywhere.

I experienced the EXACT same issue on a Late 2012 Mac Mini when it was updated to Yosimite.  Safari worked perfectly until the update and then immediately started having issues.  I scoured the internet for a solution and finally found that disabling ipv6 provided a fix.  However, that seems to do nothing in this case.

I'm really at a loss for what to do here.  If Apple supports cannot fix the issue where do I turn?  Using Chrome or another browser just isn't a solution for me.  I have years worth of saved passwords in Safari that will not export and other features such as Handoff are lost.  This was an annoying issue with a $600 Mac Mini but it's just unacceptable on a $2,000 laptop.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated guys!

I am having the same problem since I uploaded El Capitan.

I have just purchased a brand new 27" iMac and have it sitting next to my old iMac. I have not updated the old iMac with El Capitan and it is not having this problem. I have had to log in on it so I can get to this page. The only way I can view a page on my new iMac is to go to history or favorited and open the page from there.

Annoying that there has not been any proper response from support.

How do I reverse the El Capitan? Is it a reinstall or can I just go n=back a version?
