According to mactracker, your 2010 mac hasn't got Thunderbolt, so you need a mini-DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable.
I have never tried this with pre-Thunderbolt machines, so I cannot atest how well that works; but target display mode works superbly with a 2011 iMac and a Thunderbolt cable connected to my MBP.
