Q: mail folders disappeared on OS X El Capitan

Having just installed the new El Capitan i've found an issue... when opening mail, all the folders previously associated with my iCloud account are not showing. when I choose 'Get Account Info' they are all listed but will not display in the mailbox. If I then click show messages in one of the folders in the 'get account info'. All the folders are then displayed in the mailbox which I thought had fixed the issue... seemingly not! when I close and reopen mail - they're all missing again.

Is there another way of ensuring that my iCloud folders are permanently displayed?

Thanks

Hi Colinfropeterborough, My main BT account was OK but I have additional 'sub' email address that I created in the past.  The additional email accounts went strange and although I could see the accounts, they were firmly off-line.  I solved it (rightly or wrongly) by going into mail preferences, account information, outgoing mail server and selected the edit SMTP server list.  My previous set up had been for these sub-emails to use the main BT smtp profile that I had in my mail but now they refused to work with that.  I ended up selecting the new (or I hadn't seen them before) SMTP profiles in the edit section for the sub-account and saw that there was no password in there.  I added the password, saved and in a couple of seconds they were live again and my old messages reappeared.  I did these for my three bt sub email accounts.  Strangely this morning two of them have gone back to using the main BT smtp profile in my mac again, and I haven't changed anything myself.  All very strange!  I hope this helps.

Thanks for your help . My BT accounts are back on line. I have a Tiscali account that has a triangle next to it, although I have managed to get all the old mails back in it ,not working correctly . .and anther strange thing on a Virgin account when I delete emails , Mac mail goes into error and cuts off ,when it is restored the deleted mails are back in the folder. I'm hoping that there will be an update to El-Capitano to resolve this. Good luck and thanks for your help .

    Colin

I had the same problem. The mail account associated with my Apple ID had disappeared. The folder was still in ~/Library/Mail/V3 but just not visible in Mail. The disable/re-enable move via System Setting -> Internet Accounts did not work, but I found another solution here: http://osxdaily.com/2015/07/05/resolving-mail-problems-os-x-update/.

When I went to Mail -> Preferences and selected the Accounts tab, then I saw that the account was still there, but the check box for "enabled this account" was not selected. I selected it and the account came back immediately. Hope that helps.

The article on osxdaily says that if it is enabled, disable, quit Mail, start Mail and then enable should work.

I followed the suggestion on here to drag the Mail folder from the Library into the desktop window sidebar.  I then ran the little 'import mail' procedure from Mail - File - Import Mailboxes'.  Navigate to the Mail folder to the sidebar, select it and you're happy as Larry.  Or I was anyway.  All of my mailboxes have been restored under 'On My Mac'.

You have to drag the mail folder out of the Library because it is invisible to the import procedure which I do not understand.  Why put an 'import' command in Mail if the required data cannot be accessed.

I think when the Mail Folder is in the Finder sidebar, it may actually be a alias.  This is because when I tried to put it back in the Library is disappeared in a puff

    of smoke.

But then I don't know much about these things.

How do you create new folders/sub-folders (NOT smart folders) in Mail on El Capitan. I see no option for that. Thanks.

figured it out. Just drop one mail folder on another. Instant enclosing folder.

I just spent the last half hour researching why previous subfolders were not showing up in iMac Mail Mailbox list after upgrading to El Capitan.

Tried several suggested options. Kept going back to the Mail. There's a light grey text "On My Mac" link with an + sign. I had first tried that

but nothing would happen. I tried it again and Voilå, all my old folders appeared! I knew they were somewhere as I could still file e-mails accordingly.

Can we just keep one OS now Apple? Seriously.

    Hello,

    I have the same problem.

I had a folder with many sub-folders in which all my email disappeared.

I could see the name and the folder on the list but when I selected it

I received the text "NO messages".

I tried the several procedures described in this post but they didn't work for me.

By selecting folder by folder and by clicking on the button "Rebuild" under "Mailbox"

    I solved the problem.

I hope that this may be useful for someone.

    Best.
