Nov 11, 2015 9:48 AM in response to Lancerneedshelpby LaPastenague,★HelpfulTo setup a specific IP address you set it via dhcp reservation. The airport has to be either DHCP and NAT.. which is router mode or as you see I have DHCP only.. which is much less common.. don't sweat it.. the important part is below.. and will not be there if you use bridge on the airport.
Check the Network tab on the airport utility..
You are going to add a dhcp reservation so click the +
Now fill in the box.
You will need to get the MAC address of the device.. which should list in the summary if it is wirelessly connected.. if it is listed by name you can also use DHCP client ID instead of MAC address.
So one of my devices lists by IP instead of MAC address.. just hover the mouse over the IP and another screen will pop up with the MAC listing.

Nov 11, 2015 10:18 AM in response to LaPastenagueby Lancerneedshelp,Thanks LaPastenague, but this didn't help either. I tried port mapping and realized that was for devices out of the network. So I was sure your suggestion was my answer. Although my Airport Utility software is different I was able to follow your steps. When my router rebooted I lost connection entirely to the wireless adapter. I have been trying to trouble shoot my problem for a couple days and Yamaha support or Apple cannot fix my issue.
My issue may be something different than the ip address.
My Yamaha has Airplay. But I keep losing the icon randomly on all my devices. (iPhone, ipad etc). But I can still turn the amp on and even play music through the separate Yamaha app. Yamaha support said it may be the wireless adapter might not be Apple friendly, so I rebooted and went into it and it has apple capability. When I hooked it back up it would not work, until I used WPS for it to connect. When I tried to give it a specific IP address as you outlined I lost connection to the amp. (or the wireless adapter).(As I am not sure what the demon is here).
The confusing part is that I'll go back to my ipad another time and everything is there to select and things work fine. And if I do lose connection I can still access the amp through an app via the same pathway.(That part makes absolutely no sense to me.)
I questioned if it is my router, being old and tired, but I have no other network issues. (Multiple devices, wireless printer, network cloud hard drive etc.)
All my devices are up to date and I did a factory reset on the amp.
I hope this doesn't sound to confusing.............if you have any ideas or suggestions I would be glad to hear them.

Nov 11, 2015 4:21 PM in response to Lancerneedshelpby LaPastenague,Post screenshots of your setup.. from the airport utility as you see I have done.
I know that some PC stuff.. (I will count Yamaha as PC stuff because seldom do they test on apple networks).. just doesn't sit very happily with apple routers.. it is the place where wireless is more voodoo black arts than science.
Does the Yamaha have an ethernet port.. could you plug it in somewhere in the network and see if that cures the problem.
That wireless is always messing around is no surprise to me.
Let me suggest firstly you set wireless name and password short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. password should be the same rules.. but can be longer.. name <8 characters .. password >8 but less than 20.
And set fixed wireless channel.. for 2.4ghz make it say 11 or 8.. one of those two should work well.
Try it.. no luck as a test take off the security.. just for a short test.. making sure of traffic is only yours.. see if it becomes stable.
Again no luck.. I would try on 7.6.1 firmware.. or even 7.5.2 firmware..
I do not think the latest firmware is the greatest.. I have issues with lots of things (I am only apple person in the family.. everyone else is android/PC) and so I find it better using earlier firmware.
Last.. if you must stick to wireless (and using another AE as wireless to ethernet bridge is not possible)..
I would buy a cheap end TP-Link wireless router.. a $35 N wireless job.. cheap basic unit and use it in WAP mode.. and just see if the wireless problems go away.. it can be plugged into the airport.. I cannot guarantee you airplay will work on non-apple routers.. but I have found TP-Link stuff has generally good firmware.. more apple aware than most of the cheap end stuff.. and of course if you buy carefully get something from the dd-wrt compatibility list.. as they do a good job of the various apple protocols.

Nov 14, 2015 12:01 PM in response to LaPastenagueby Lancerneedshelp,Hi again,
Had a few busy days so I wasn't able to reply to you right away.
As I suspected........the amp works fine directly connected to my Ethernet port.
My network name and password are already pretty simple as well. I live in a rural area, most people don't even have password protection.
The router is now on channel 8.
My firmware is 7.6.4. I really don't want to mess with that......like I said before......vintage router. It seems to work all the time.
I'm certain this adapter is the problem. I rebooted it today again and for the first time ever I did not have to use the WPS button to make it connect.
But the problem is still there.
I'm not sure how the WPA2 Shared key works either. In the wireless adapter setup it asks for this. I found it in settings but its 50 characters long. I typed in my WPA password instead.
Plus I was wondering about Access Control, should I be using the "timed" or "radius" setting?
This is getting so frustrating. I have another network A/V receiver in my house that is Ethernet connected and it works flawlessly.
Hopefully I can get my cat5 hooked up soon before I go crazy. Lol. Just waiting on my AV guy to have some time.
Thanks for all your help.......I'm going to keep trying in the mean time.

Nov 14, 2015 1:36 PM in response to Lancerneedshelpby LaPastenague,Plus I was wondering about Access Control, should I be using the "timed" or "radius" setting?
You should have no access controls.. you do not want timed access as that shuts things off.. and radius is much more complex wireless security.
If your wireless security is now set to wpa2 personal in the AE.. then set it to wpa/wpa2 personal.
If you are in rural area.. turn off wireless security altogether.. and it might then work.. always a good test btw.. if it still forgets the wireless name between restarts of the AMP your name is not SMB compatible.. is it pure alphanumeric.. no spaces??
The Yamaha might not work well with higher level security.
I do need screenshots.. if you really want me to help.. I need to see the setup.. and I would recommend you set static IP on the Yamaha if that is possible.. although WPS should work.. it has to be remembered by the amp though so you don't have to renew it every time you turn it on.
I still think you are better buying a wireless bridge or a product like express that allows you to connect by optical to the Amp and forget trying to use wireless.. at least until you get ethernet working.

Nov 14, 2015 2:23 PM in response to LaPastenagueby Lancerneedshelp,Ok thanks,
Access control is off.
I was wpa/wpa2 personal , but when I switched security off, all my devices left the network.
Wireless is pure alphanumeric. And the amp does remember, that's the crazy thing. Under network settings on the amp it always says connected.
Devices don't register the airplay, but the amp always sees the network and plays off an app. All through the same route. Its like the amp isn't sending out the "Airplay" signal.
As for screen shots. I was trying to send you some, but my pc will not do them for some reason. Alt + PrtScn. Just will not work. Been working on that too.
Windows 10 forums, etc.
I think another problem is, that the wireless adapter has an ip address and so does the amp. Maybe I need to turn DHCP off on both and try to reserve ip addresses on the router for both.
I love the express idea.......planning on getting one just to expand some wifi range. I just like to fix things......or at least problem solve......this one has me.......
Ill try to get some screen shots. Router settings etc.

Nov 14, 2015 6:37 PM in response to Lancerneedshelpby LaPastenague,Big Squid breaks my rules.. don't use spaces.
I know I am being petty. and some minor things are irrelevant.. but if possible follow the rules.
Even the name of the unit.. get rid of all names that have spaces.. because it is not a valid network name.
-
Nov 18, 2015 11:14 AM in response to LaPastenagueby Lancerneedshelp,Hi again,
Ok......spaces are gone.....in network name and router name.
I reserved the ip address for the wireless device.
Everything is still working the same.......I do have a message in the Airport telling me to switch to bridge mode.
I'm not too sure what this will do to the rest of my network..........
-
Nov 18, 2015 1:15 PM in response to Lancerneedshelpby LaPastenague,I reserved the ip address for the wireless device.
Did it work.. did the AMP get the IP you reserved.. ?? Please make sure and never assume.
Ping it from the computer.
Is it responding to pings?
Everything is still working the same.
Meaning what exactly.. the amp is disappearing from the network?? Or merely disappearing in itunes which is not the same thing at all.
Go back to basics.. if you cannot reach the AMP from the application.. ping it.. if it is there and responding.. the issue is airplay software or whatever you are using and nothing to do with the network. Airplay is not noted as stable.. certainly if you are running the PC version of iTunes I would expect poor reliability.
I do have a message in the Airport telling me to switch to bridge mode.
Have you always been running double NAT?
Double NAT is an issue to do with your connection to the internet.. it is totally irrelevant to your local LAN connection.
From an internet point of view.. why are you using double NAT??
If you have a standard cable, adsl, fibre connection with a modem router the airport should be bridged.
If you have satellite, wimax, 3G/4G, building internet it is often supplied to you with private IP addressing.. and in order for your network to use it double NAT is necessity.. you simply must do it..
However if your problem is the AMP and its connection to the network.. this is not relevant.

Nov 18, 2015 2:50 PM in response to LaPastenagueby Lancerneedshelp,Everything is the same, as in, the problem is exactly the same. Amp connects through an iPhone/iPad from an app with no problem. (ie) It seems to be always on the network. But the Airplay icon appears randomly, sometimes on one device, but not on another, or sometimes its visible everywhere. This does happen on iTunes on my pc as well. I can rule out this as an iTunes problem though. Once Airplay connects to a device I can use any music or video app to play.
My internet connection is not typical either. I have a wireless rural setup. Not 3g/4g. So that answers that one.
As for pinging, I cant figure out how to do it properly. But in Network Connections, I can see the wireless adapter as connected. (not saying the ip address is being reserved). And the amp shows up as a network device when I search my Network connections. Everything appears to be operating in the network properly.
To clarify, its the wireless device that needs the reserved ip address not the amp, as it is connected to the wireless adapter by an Ethernet cable. Correct?

Nov 18, 2015 5:53 PM in response to Lancerneedshelpby LaPastenague,I have an A/V receiver that has a wifi adapter that requires a static
Sorry.. I was reading that the A/V Receiver had inbuilt wifi adapter.. maybe even a standard USB wifi ..
To clarify, its the wireless device that needs the reserved ip address not the amp, as it is connected to the wireless adapter by an Ethernet cable. Correct?
I think i now understand the problem better..
A wireless repeater or bridge can hide the devices connected to it from the network unless it uses WDS. And Apple routers do not support WDS unless it is to another apple router.
So what I now need to know.. what is the make and model of the wireless adapter??
And can you setup the Amp behind the wireless bridge correctly or not.
Let me show you.. this is an important part of understanding the issues of networking.
I have a wireless bridge in my upstairs area with the main router downstairs. Main router is Apple Gen5 TC.. more complicated than that.. but for now it is enough.
I can check the devices connected via the airport utility v5. (only v5 so use your windows computer).
This is under advanced, Logs and Statistics. Find the MAC address of the amp .. it should be printed somewhere on the Amp label. Or you will have to discover it by directly connecting it by ethernet to the airport.
What is happening is that the wireless bridge is absent.. it has not recorded its IP into the list. I actually don't even know its IP at the moment.. and I will have to find it.
So problem 1. We have no IP for the wireless bridge.
What is even worse is that the devices that connected to the wireless bridge are invisible to the network clients in some cases..
Take my ROKU.. this is plugged by ethernet into the wireless bridge.
My ROKU is the equivalent of your Amp.
It has IP of 192.168.2.204. It also shows the correct MAC address.
B8:3E:59:78:6C:CA
When I run a netstat scan on the computer.. it shows me what the computer can see..
Do you notice that the ROKU is missing?
Problem 2.. No ROKU
So to bring the ROKU into the computer tables.. I am going to ping it..
I open a terminal and type ping 192.168.2.204 (in a PC open a command window and type the same thing).
ping 192.168.2.204
PING 192.168.2.204 (192.168.2.204): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.2.204: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=166.004 ms (notice the slow first ping to discover it).
64 bytes from 192.168.2.204: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=3.496 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.204: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=3.601 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.204: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=3.544 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.204: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=2.124 ms
So the IP is available on the network.. but without help the computer cannot find it.
Now let me show you the netstat scan.
Notice that the IP is now in the list.. but guess what.. it has the WRONG MAC address.
It has the MAC address of the wireless bridge.. which is hiding it..
Problem 3. ROKU has the wrong MAC address
So you see if you fix the IP to the MAC address you are now in big trouble.. because 192.168.2.208 also has the same MAC address. as will everything else that connects to the wireless bridge. You cannot fix IP to devices behind a wireless bridge.
Problem 4. You cannot fix the IP to the MAC address because it is meaningless.
This is because this is a non apple wireless bridge that is not connected by WDS.
WDS is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_distribution_system
In order for this to work you MUST use another apple wireless router.
The best would most likely be an express.. because it can also plug into the Amp via its optical cable and take over the role of airplay. It is not 100% reliable .. nothing over wireless is or ever will be.. but it is a lot better than brand X wireless bridge..
You can buy a cheap second hand airport extreme.. any N wireless model.. lets say Gen4 or Gen5 and you can then set this up a lot better.
Or you run ethernet to the Amp which is what you should have done in the first place.
Sorry for all the messing around.. I just didn't understand that you were using a separate wireless bridge.

Nov 21, 2015 10:48 AM in response to LaPastenagueby Lancerneedshelp,So, I think we are done.
The wireless adapter is a Yamaha brand YWA-10.
But what you're telling me says this will never work properly as I have set up.
I have cat5 in the wall, (and every room), just my A/V guy is backed up, to come put the ends on.
I was hoping I could just make this work temporarily and partly because I have a tendency to not take "no" for an answer.
My router is on the very old side of the scale, so before adding hardware to my network, I do think that should be the first purchase.
It just never gives me problems.....ever.
I'm not sure present generation pc or mac routers will ever last as long as this one has.
Thank you for all your insight and help,
Lance.
