I am ok with the first time pin but it asks every 48 hours and randomly depending on what feature I am accessing.
As far as a backup. I would use my password if the fingerprint worked all the time except after a reboot.

Did you read the article I linked to? It explains Apple's approach to the matter. It is secure. Whether or not you chose to use it is entirely up to you.
