Q: El capitan cut the support for firewire IEEE 1394 ?

Hi ,

I'm very depressed because this time the problem is very very big ....

with my " vintage " MAC PRO with firewire IEEE 1394 I have a Mixer MIDAS VENICE F24

this mixer work only with that cable .... because before post here, I have tried with a cable with a firewire 400 to a firewire IEEE 1394,

but the software don't recognize the mixer.

I updated drivers of mixer without results....

Googling appear as a solution a downgrade from el capitan to yosemite but the apple store tell me that the yosemite is no more available to download

from the italian store.

I think also to all peoples with my similar like " vintage " mac pro ( probably millions of peoples ) that may have a sound card or camera with that connection

and one day, because Apple decide to cut firewire IEEE 1394 they are in my same situation !

Why remove support to this kind of firewire ? ok is up to you, but please help me...

I have 2 questions...

1) May I downgrade to yosemite and have again the firewire IEEE 1394 support ?

If yes where I can download yosemite ? from here appear impossible.

2) May I buy a PCI Firewire card and get again working firewire IEEE 1394 ?

Any help is very appreciated.... the mixer costed a me a lot and also my MAC PRO and all expansions I done to it in these years .... like ram and new disks.

I work with this so imagine my big frustration in this moment....

thank you.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

All of my Firewire hard drives and my iSight cameras all still work.

IEEE1394 is the data transfer specification for Firewire. Firewire includes power in addition to data transfer, so I don't understand what you mean by a "firewire IEEE 1394" cable. Essentially, IEEE 1394 and Firewire are interchangeable and Firewire certainly still works in El Capitan.

It is more likely that your Mixer doesn't work with El Capitan. If the manufacturer doesn't have an update for El Capitan, you'll need to revert to Yosemite.

If you had Yosemite installed, it should be in the purchases tab of App Store. If it came installed on your Mac, then you can install it using Internet Recovery.

To revert to Yosemite, you must erase the disk completely (Partition it) to remove the El Capitan Recovery Partition, then install OS X. You can do both when you boot into Internet Recovery. OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

If your Mac Pro is too "vintage" for Internet Recovery, you will need to use your install DVD that came with the Mac to erase the drive and install that OS. In that case you will have Yosemite in the Purchases list and you can download that and install it.

I don't believe is my mixer driver because also a Lacie cd writer master 525 FW ( with IEEE1394 I supposed the first firewire cable appeared, not the 800 and not the 400 the one before of these .... ) doesn't work anymore. I slam on it one audio cd and nothing happens... the cd rom doesn't appear on my devices...

both need drivers updates ? I don't believe this ....

btw I wish to downgrade to yosemite but i'm not able to download it from the store. and i don't have it on my app folder....

please help me. thanks a lot

There was nothing before a Firewire 400. There were 4-pin and 6-pin cables. The 4-pin were normally found on video cameras. I think Sony called it iLink or something like that.

If you don't have Yosemite in your Purchases, how did you get your Mac running Yosemite?

That is a FW 400, 6-pin cable. I can't find my old FW 400 drive to check, but my old iSight camera is FW 400 and works fine.

If you installed Yosemite, then the OS X Yosemite should be in your Purchases tab in App Store. You may have hidden it, so try this to see if it is still there:

You didn't happen to have Time Machine running?  I've read where you can downgrade via Time Machine.

It is not legal to sell the OS if it was downloaded from the app store. The license is not transferable.
