Q: HDMI input to mini display port sound is ok but no Video

Hi,

I have a iMac 27" Mid 2010 with the latest 10.11.1 OSX.

I bought a HDMI input to mini Display port cable converter compliant with HDMI 1.4 and Displayport 1.2 standard saying that supports up to 4K @30Hz and 1080 @120Hz...

I'm trying to connect my PS3 to my iMac... I've set the resolution to the minnimum.. 720p @50Hz and when I turn the PS3 on connected to the iMac, it detects that I turned the PS3 on and goes into a black screen.. and the sound comes out of the iMac but no video...

Can someone please explain if I have top do any additional configuration? Why is there no image? I've searched forums and didn't find anyone with the same problem as me... only people that can see the image, but no sound... my issue is the opposite...

Please help me out!

A:

I managed to get it working!!!!! the configuration was the lowest on the PS3 572p and not 720p as i thought... and that didn't work! I had to manually set the output to 720 now the image works!

Are you trying to use Target Display Mode?
U se your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support

[EDIT] It will only work with other Thunderbolt capable devices. It won't work with devices which only output HDMI or DVI.

Yes. When I turn the PS3 on the iMac automatically goes black and the sound works.. I can cmd+F2 and change back to the OSX and cmd+F2 again and I;m back at the black screen

Sorry I didn't understand... I saw lots of videos of people connecting their PS3 and XBOX to the iMac... Why can't I connect mine? The audio goes through... only the video that is failing... could it be the adapter?

II would revisit those videos but I believe that you need to use a third-party adapter to convert HDMI to Mini DisplayPort.

but this cable is also an adapter... It's not from a well known brand like Kanex.. but it is almost half the price of a kanex... and it is supposed to work better than a Kanex. The kanex only supports 720p... this cable/adapter supports 4K !!! Not the my iMac supports 4K but it should work with 1080p...

I suggest that you return that cable and buy the Kanex.
