Q: Transform/Zoom inside a mask

Hello!
I've got a little problem with applying a transform actions inside a mask. What I want to do is define a certain space, like 800x800px in absolut value, which position should not change, while the material of the clip is in 4k. If I apply a mask to "Effects" and then use "Transform" to change values, it changes the position of the mask as well - I don't want that. I want the mask to stay fixed, while I zoom and pan around in the clip.

Can anybody help me? Please bear in mind I'm new to Final Cut Pro X.

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

What is the frame size of your project? 1080p? And you want different parts of your 4K clip to appear in a fixed 800x800 "window" inside your frame? Is that it?

What is to appear in the rest of the frame?

Hi! The frame size of the project is 4k, sometimes rendered down to 1080p, sometimes not. The 4k clip features moving a full room of moving persons. I want to manually track their motions and make them appear in a 800x800px frame. The rest of the frame is another camera perspective of the room.

Central point is that i want the mask to first be drawn and then be able to manipulate/transform/move around the video clip behind the mask, without ever changing the position of the map.

    Thanks for your help!

MMake the clip a compound in the project. Open the compound and do the transform there. Apply the mask to the compound in the project.

Thank you, this does work! It is however, quite a cumbersome workflow, for the task I want to do. The reason is, that I want to control who's in the masked box. If I make a compound clip and edit it in the timeline, I don't have any indication where my mask was. So what transform settings I have to use become a guessing game. Is there another trick to do that or edit the transform settings of the compound trick, while it ISN'T in the timeline viewer?

Does Motion make this task easier?

    Here is another option:

Since the mask does not change, you can do this in a sort of reverse way.

    1) Put what is supposed to be the "background" clip atop the one you want to mask.

    2) Apply the desired mask to the "background" clip, and click on "Invert mask". This will make the center of the clip transparent, so the other clip will show through the "box" you cut out of it.

    3) Move and scale the "foreground" clip as much as you want.

Edit: you may do this without reversing the position of clips in the timeline by setting the "Blend mode" of the foreground clip to "behind".

Edit 2: I tested this on my mac and it worked like a charm :-)
