Q: MBP pro 15inch mid 2009 has random freezes, RAM issue?

Hello all,

my MBP 15 inch mid 2009 has been randomly freezing lately. Only a hard reboot will resolve the issue. I have already upgraded my HD to an SSD a while back and that has massively improved performance. I've been thinking about upgrading my RAM to 8GB, could that resolve the issue? The CleanMyMac monitor shows me that the RAM is often nearly fully used, at the moment I have 50MB free running a simple Excel file, Chrome, Slack, Mail and Calendar. I have included an Etresoft report for full disclosure

First, Remove cleanmymac and any other mac optimisation software, You don't need it and it can cause stability and performance issues on your mac.

Further i would advice to stop using google chrome since is is very resource hungry. Instead use safari

You can use activity monitor to see if you would benefit from upgrading the ram. While using the computer normally open activity monitor and look under the memory tab. Here is a graph that shows the memory pressure. if that is to high you could upgrade your ram.

Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support

    Hope this helps!

I will switch to Safari to see if that helps. Though I doubt the CleanMyMac is the issue, I've been running it for years and don't do the 'deep' sweeps. Naturally I will remove it to see if it helps. The issue has been apparent since Capitan so that's why I thought the ram upgrade might do the trick.

Would the shortage of memory explain the random freezes?

I have upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 8GB and that seems to have solved the issue. With the same activities as before the upgrade, activity monitor shows that I use around 5,5GB so I guess the memory was rather stressed before
